High Textures MP server

Post by viper691 »

Decided might be best to just start a new thread on this....

I have been looking for a public server that runs or would be willing to run with max settings. That is to change the default server setting on textures from medium to high. I log in and it always is telling me my textures were reduced to medium to match the server.

This would be a Vice ?? but why does the server care what graphic detail the individual clients are running at?

So far it seems everyone running servers that i have tried believes that it would be game breaking for some people to set it to high textures. I respect that position but would also like to hear how many people actually have trouble running the game on high texture settings.

Thanks guys

This I can answer. The server forces a detail setting so that players don't have different shapes in terrain on the same planet (visual and collision).

Let's say someone wanted to run a high-texture server, and for some odd reason it's wildly popular and sees 35 people all the time. What are we looking at, ballpark, in terms of required resources and potential server loads?

There would be several factors to consider. Results might vary between the 2D and 3D versions of the server program, depending on system. A decent CPU and memory performance would help (above the minimum spec listed in the instructions would be recommended for hosting say, more than maybe around 12-18 players), but a lot would depend on the performance of the internet connection overall. Other factors would include what proximity cap and update rate settings you select.

Starport 6 is running the following:

Max 35 player. Update rate 100/100L/250H. Maximum framerate 180. Proximity cap: None. T1 commercial bandwidth. 2 core Xeon processor, 4 gigabytes of RAM. Using 2D version of the server program as there is no video card. Running on Windows Server 2008 R2.

Would this support high textures with 35 people logged in?

High terrain textures won't matter for hosting performance, that's a client-side performance factor. Yes, depending on proximity cap and real-world connection performance, a setup like that should be able to handle up to 35 players under normal conditions. If you visit a site like speedtest.net or similar and check its performance, that can be a better gauge of how fast the connection is versus just the spec data.

Just tried speedtest.net. From Sydney Australia it was a ping of 70, 157.96Mbps download, 12.85Mbps.

When I tested with the host in Dallas, it came back with a ping of 0. so I guess it's less than 1 millisecond. But everyone is not in Dallas so I chose one the farthest I could think of from the server location.
