Engineering Lab Tutorial needed

Post by DaveK »

Here's a quote from the boss:

... in the main engineering lab menu, a template name is not displayed as once you change anything in the menu, it would no longer be a template for whatever you might be building. The idea being that you can load a labeled template to view what you need to acquire or build something, but the label doesn't carry over into the editable menu, only the selectable templates menu and the item's name after it's built.

As I understand it, the engineering lab isn't just a place that loads game produced templates for manufacture but a place where you can edit templates or even create your own. It's potentially a game within a game in its own right.

I load a template but can't find an 'editable menu'. Clicking (left or right clicks) on the images of the resources reduces their value by one - down to zero. I can't find a way to increase the values.

Has anyone created or is anyone intending to create a basic tutorial just to get players started with experimenting with designs?

If not does anyone know of any source of basic info to get me started so I could use create a tutorial

:)

Thanks! A few re-reads and much pondering and some guesswork I think that what's on offer is:
  • There are formulae for most (all?) pieces of equipment of but you can't play around with the inputs like you can in the weapons lab. You can build a metal mining beam but you can't fine tune it to increase the mining rate or the effective range
  • I found that by dragging items from the the cargo bay list in available resources to the array boxes you can add things to the array boxes
  • You don't need output info because you're building standard pieces of equipment.
If I'm right then the above three points form the basis for the tutorial! :P

And Vice is correct in saying It's not really feasible to try and guess how to build various equipment items using the engineering lab. There are simply too many build parameters, item combinations, and quantity options to be able to effectively put together a formula randomly.

However it might be worth changing one or two values and see if the lab will build something - boost the power supply array a bit and see if the beam is longer range or quicker - I strongly suspect you will get a fail message though!

The tutorial is done ... been done for quite awhile. I've just been putting off uploading the pix to Photobucket. Priorities: quest fixes, HUD mods and doing some actual flying.

P.S. Not to forget: reviewing this forum three or four times a day ... which, since Legacy's release, takes a relatively long time.

Yeah, and don't expect any recipes. He just shows you the basics. You still have to find the recipes yourself. Which I think is a good thing. Gives people incentive.

Yep:

Copy and paste this into an text editor and print it out for a paper version of the tutorial to peruse over coffee :P :P
  1. collect the blueprint
  2. read it
  3. collect the resources (using hangar if necessary)
  4. drag from cargo bay/hangar to increase the quantity by one
  5. click on the template to reduce the quantity by one
  6. build the equipment
    [/list=1]
I can see why it would be too complex (and not relevant to the core philosophy of the game) but part of me says that playing around with the template to boost a (for example) mining beam's range and/or rate would be very cool! :P

Still - to be able to build 'hard to get' equipment (as long as the templates aren't just as hard to get) is a great addition to gameplay and a possible new career; Eqiupment2U Enterprises!!

    :)
