Alliance Quest 1 Part 6

So I made it to part 6 of the introductory alliance quest in which you have to use a tractor beam to get diamonds out of a container. I did not have the tractor beam when I first got there, so I returned to a station, installed a tractor beam and returned to the container. When I try to use the beam on the container, it either does nothing or says it's trying to mine Hydrogen and there's not enough cargo space. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

You can jettison the unwanted types of items as you mine until you see diamonds being gathered.

If the container is in a nebula, you need to get really close. Having two cargo bays helps ... as one bay collects hydrogen, you can maneuver the beam until the second bay starts to collect diamonds. The same technique works for any container embedded in another medium, like water or oxygen.
