Am I making it up that in training, a cargo scanner was able to determine the composition of asteroids? If that IS the case, why isn't my scanner showing that to me on my target screen?
Thanks,
CR

Hi CelticRaven,
To scan asteroids you need a "Target Scanner". Not "Cargo Scanner".

Would seem to be my unicorn I am hunting, none in Pearl, or the neighboring systems.

Some items can only be acquired by using the Engineering Lag. And, for that, you need a template ... usually found in a data drive.

I managed to find a target scanner in a station... but it wasn't cheap. Maybe by constructing one in the Engineering Lab you can save money. Or if you're lucky an AI pilot may flog you a stolen one for dirt cheap!

I'm really hoping the alliance quest I am on has the recipe for the engineering lab. (and soon) Since that is more or less my primary source of money. (not wanting that long term but have yet to figure out better sources.)
BTW I really wish an item that unavailable wasn't in the tutorial training.

I managed to find a target scanner about 15 hours into the game.
I think the reason you want one is the same reason i had, to min specific materials. I have found that its far easier (and more lucrative) to get the 3 dedicated mining beams, then load the appropiate one for the material you want, and pick any asteriod. You will only get the desider material.

I think I was given mine when a NPC wanted to dump it as contraband! From post: 183588, Topic: tid=12303, author=Sinbad wrote:I managed to find a target scanner in a station... but it wasn't cheap. They really are worth every credit if you're using mining asteroids to either stock up on metals for building work of making money by mining the most profitable stuff in the area (diamonds usually more often than platinum in EL)

Hell is being in a pure platinum asteroid field... with a diamond mining beam
