[bug/exploit?] Infinite mining regardless of storage space...

Post by illuminutti »

I'm not entirely sure this is a bug, but rather an exploit.

While mining, frequently one can find other NPC ships doing the same in clusters. All I need to do is get close to a ship that is working an asteroid, mine the same asteroid and open a trade window. Then I can continually sell anything I mine with the NPC pilot, ad infinitum!... I mean, OK, granted that trade prices go down with every transaction. Yet still, there's no real need to go back to a station or to even have several storage bays. Since the other pilot seems to not have a storage problem at all, and is willing to buy anything I mine (albeit at lower price) without resistance.

I feel that this is a broken mechanic. In particular the NPC's capacity to just keep purchasing from me without running out of space, pun not intended.

Is this a bug? Because it's certainly an exploit in my POV.

Glad to be able to contribute in even the smallest way to such a fantastic game Vice. I've been a fan of your work since your first release. Let me thank you personally for creating such wonderful entertainment and gaming value.

Also, don't the asteroids deplete after a bit? I mean I guess you could make a ton of $$ before that happens, but I've depleted them in EM.

:o You can blow them up (especially those which threaten to hit a planet) but, even in EM, I've never managed to deplete an asteroid.

Weird, I swear once in EM I was mining and the asteroid just kinda disappeared. Like I remember it even having an animation where it shrunk. I also might be losing my mind.

I did such things in Evochron Legends and Evochron Mercenary to raise my starting capital, so there is nothing new. I can't understand how can it be considered as being "exploit" if the game's mechanics provides you legal opportunity to trade with other NPCs and players? Of course, you can sell your cargo to other pilots withot docking on trade stations but NPCs purchase your stuff at much lower prices than you can get at the trade station. Also NPCs ships' cargo space is limited by the number of cargo bays their ship have and they can't buy infinitely from you.

The way I read it, that is the bug ... the AI's cargo space seems to be unlimited.

someone will have to test and quantify exactly how much they sell to the NPC. What's the most they can hold, if they have 5 cargo bays, that's 125 units? Can we confirm that someone sold them 125 units of cargo? I'll try it if I remember and see an NPC mining.
