Demo Uploads & 512Mb VRAM ?s

Post by matchbox2022 »

So....I had no idea this was coming out so soon, brand new game and on sale for people with EM? I just bought EM less than a month ago :P.
oh well, I'd love to buy and support but there are some pretty pressing issues which mayyyy not be solveable on this forum but I will ask away.

Biggest one, Can someone please upload the file / torrent it in a different location? Gamershell is giving an authentication key error each time I try it. So can't even try it to see if my laptop will handle it.

2) What's the word on mods and custom configs / profiles being able to be exported over to EL from EM?

3) If a video card only has 512MB video ram but all other settings such as CPU and shader model in spec will it run alright? poorly? or not at all? *note Im on DX9c still*
4) Since Im unable to download the demo "for now" to answer these questions.....(although honestly I'll buy the game very much regardless)....Can anyone confirm if it WILL NOT RUN on win xp at all?
Depending on the answers I'll either be putting win 7 finally on my computer....or I will say I'm SOL laptop, sell it and get an m6500 with a non-10 year old GPU.

Thanks anyone / everyone / Vice. I know you are likely busy, but this was an incredible surprise to see this out, with blowupable cities? ***censored* hell yes!

Vice made a lot of graphics updates just prior to release ... and suggested that the changes probably left WinXP in the dust. As for the rest, I have no real idea.

Thank you for the response.
Yeah, I very much figure at the least I need Windows 7, which isn't an issue, that can be done tonight.
The bigger issue is the demo upload, otherwise I'd be answering most of these questions myself.

Is the download really hosted by Gamershell? I thought Vice hosted his own download web page. :o

Email sent.

**BACKUP FILE UPLOAD**

I'm not sure when this will be discontinued, but in the meantime if anyone is having issues with gamershell being "hell" and not allowing a download.

Win XP throws a "".exe has encountered a problem and needs to close error on program start, can post log but I suppose that's a for sure the XP won't work.

My original backup Iso of windows 7 is corrupted so Im going thru a mini 2nd hell trying to get another one...so cannot test a 2006 SM3.0 video card yet on this game.

This is the backup install link I just posted with Vice's permission, should work for a couple days.

If worse comes to worse, there are stores on EBay that sell Windows7 New Install / Repair / Restore disks for around $8us.

All you need is to have possession of your own Windows7 License Key.
The one I got for my current rig worked exactly as advertised, and my install is authenticated.
Just make sure you read the seller's disclaimers and follow the provided instruction page before you start.

The disk I used gave me a clean, from release day 1, version of Win7, so be prepared for ALOT of updates.

So, good news and...more good news.

If anyone has a 512 MB SM 3 dGPU with Windows XP you're bust.

If you have Windows 7, the same computer will run the game with updated drivers.......
better than in xp????

I had to disable shadows unfortunately that was a system hog (thankfully planets still have a dark side), but I am getting about a 5-10 fps boost in every locale across the board in this game so far compared to EM, I've just had time to use the demo around planets and rings, which were the two things which really kicked my laptop around....was there some serious trimming the fat or something? It's running fantastic.

I have a sneaky feeling the magic performance boost has more to do with my updated drivers or windows 7 however and will test later.
Just letting everyone know that the minimum of 1GB of VRam might not be true afterall.

I'm currently running no AA, no shadows (fps killers), and on 1920x1200
But, everything else is cranked to maximum.
"SO far. So good"

Flying through canyons with no throttling like I'm bloody han solo on a 10 year old gaming laptop?
Thank you Vice :P

Glad you were able to get it to work. I ran into a few issues with 512 MB video cards during testing, so made the decision to list 1 GB as minimum. But with details turned down, it may run on some systems with only 512 MB video memory, as long as it otherwise meets the minimum hardware feature set requirements. It will just largely be an unsupported way to run the game and may have a chance of insufficient video memory problems.

The new game uses a different version of DirectX that likely does a better job of utilizing GPU resources than what EM was based on. It also generally uses less system memory and has some other rendering/behavior benefits as well. This is covered in more detail on the development on the game's website if you'd like to learn more about it. It can mean some players will see a significant performance increase in this game compared to EM, for others it may not be the case, especially with some of the more advanced/higher detail graphics features in the new game turned on (shadows being one of them).

 The magic performance boost has a lot to do with Vice's persistence in optimizing the game engine ... it went through at least two or three major changes.

Well I think I've been convinced to move on to the world of 2010s and finalize my Win 7 32bit OS install. :P
Have a lot more testing to do, this laptop wasn't supposed to use Win 7, therefore drivers have been an incredible itch, inching forward to make it work, sound was the hardest part.
Yeah I can CLEARLY see some optimizing / multithreading going on, I was kinda awestruck seeing 60 fps in a nebula or more than 30 on a planet on the settings I have and no crackles or audio hiccups compared to EM while looking fantastic.

Although I'm also pretty sure my vcard being clocked to 60gb/s of memory helps. I'll likely still upgrade though, this was more of a proof of concept. And I'll definitely buy. And read about the development a bit more.

As far as mods go....
Do you guys know where I could find the old EM fulcrum jump sound? Find this one really quiet, and on that note....what kind of mods from EM would work here? Or is it plug n find out?
*Mostly looking into transferring the perch cockpit over to this one* (though the stock cockpit does look amazing on it's own, want more visibility without turning the cockpit off)

 You might check SeeJay's website for mods. Some of the smaller EM mods work right out of the box. Others will require the drag-and-test method.

I'm sure it will work eventually even if it doesn't yet, it's the most popular cockpit mod I believe. Super duper immersive. WELL This must be like crack for me since I just bought it.
:P THANK YOU FOR THE SALE considering I just....like...JUST got into EM :p, I figured the prices are so low I can justify buying it since if it were originally around 40$ I still likely would've bought it (cheap for a good game these days).

I had one quick thing to ask, what's the word on gifting the game (like EM that I won't be using now) to another person when you are done with it so they can try it? Or is that a no no aka. one system only. Or is sharing keys allowed for LAN games only? For example, I'm not totally sure if I can share or "should" with a certain brother of mine.
