I built a constructor and acquired a fuel converter. How does one use it to get material from a star without burning up?:(

What you get from stars is fuel for your ship. Install the fuel converter in an equipment slot and your tractor beam in a second equipment slot. Then carefully make your way toward a star while your tractor beam is engaged (Alt-B). Keep an eye on your fuel gauge and, when it starts to increase, maintain that distance from the star.

Keeping your speed up and your flight path at an obtuse angle in relation to the source of gravity helps too.
Alternately, nebula gas can be used as a source of fuel, and is much safer.
*In case you don't know- To sell fuel, enter a negative number ie: -100, -200, etc. into the Refueling menu.

I've learned more from asking a few questions here than any other game I have ever played. I'm sure that there are other new players out there with questions. Don't be shy! The top guys in this game can be a great help to you and will save you a lot of grief. Just avoid asking for spoilers.

We're glad to help Sythsillis.
I guess it's a point of pride for us long-timers that the Forum is a friendly place for new players.
@ Marvin and Ironman: Yep.
Creating a 5000 L/mu (measurement: Liquid Unit) Tanker and selling fuel in a high(er) econ place - like Atlas - is a decent way to make credits. It can be a bit slow though, so if you're more about the activity of it than the prospect of fast money, then it can be quite enjoyable too.

Don't forget - you can also slurp up hydrogen molecules from a nearby, 'friendly' nebula. Next step - find a handy constructor station. Roll over the hydrogen.... good cash to be made!
