As a new player, I consider myself lucky to have found a maxim-r. Would it be worthwhile to upgrade it in the workshop or would I just mess it up?

I use the Maxim-R ... but only because I'm too lazy to create something better in the workshop. Better, in this case, means slightly better range and a good amount of kinetics.

It's a good weapon but you can create your own that use less energy (Can fire it longer).

Crafted weapons also have a kinetic effect that is very nice to have.

If you mean actually change the specs of the Maxim-R you've bought, then you can't. The Weapon Lab only lets you create a cannon or missile from scratch.

If you mean create a cannon with similar but better specs, then I'd suggest you try the Maxim-R you've got and see if it suits your combat style. I actually prefer a cannon with long range/low energy usage so I can fire for a long period of time and stay out of the opponents kill range, even though it doesn't do as much damage per hit. I then created a cannon in the Weapon Lab that I can fire continually in my set up with optimum (for me) range and damage.

So - try it and see if it works for you! Then you can play around in the WL and create your dream equipment

I still get killed quickly but not quite as quick as before.
