Weapon Test Method

Post by PaulB »

Someone has probably thought of this before but I haven't seen it posted anywhere.

A method to test your Cannons & Beams. It's not as good as having a friend sit and let you take pot shots at him - but if none are available then this is 2nd best and works fairly well.

I used Talison WZ since the missiles are readily available and deploy a Sensor and you'll probably find lone Vonari to test on - but Lost Rucker would be good to test on Rebel/Guild Starmasters & Mammoths.

(1) Deploy a Sensor station
(2) stock up your missile slots alternating Lynx, Rage, Lynx, Rage, etc. etc.
(3) Load the Cannon & Beam you wawnt to test.
(4) Go hunt down a single Red at just a relatively slow speed and when he comes at you within good missile range fire 1 Lynx & Rage at him to temporarily knock out his Engines and Weapons.
(5) Come to a stop with in Gun Range and test and time how long it takes to take down his shields and then to kill him.

He doesn't stay disabled all that long - maybe 1/2 minute to a minute - so you may have to fire another Lynx and/or Rage at him to keep him silent.

I found it a pretty good test on a Vonari I, B, anf F.
Also I didn't see a whole lot of difference between an RL, ML, and CL beams. Not enought to make me keep a CL loaded.
I think I'll keep the ML and RL and alternate them if I see fit.
All but the CL are at max WL settings.
For Cannon, well, everyone can suit themselves.

Weapon Test Method

Thanks for the hint/methodology Paul.
Instead of a Vonari you can use a cooperative teammate for target. We did this with Wolf a few times.
As I see it, this type of test will qualify weapons in optimal conditions on a single neutralized target and basically tell you what the metrics show already. After many tests, it turns out that each beam/canon combo has it's own behavior and therefore necessitates different tactics with regards to the way you approach the live target. On top of this, fighting with a bot or versus a human are two completely different stories.

The main line in my sense is finding a combination that suits your style, or find a suitable style for every combination and determine the most efficient one, knowing that the optimal load vs Vonari will not be the same as when fighting in PvP.

Secondly, I think this is all about compromise, and all the power you put into a weapon is that much less power for your shields. As per previous point above, you might want more powerful weapons for a 5*5 waypoint contract to eradicate the threat as fast as possible, while engaging another player with maxed out fusion beam and laser weapons certainly would seem tempting but has good chances of getting you killed due to lack of shield power.

I have a question about the behavior of canons though :

It could make sense in a way that a rail canon round would mess up a shield a bit faster than a more powerful fusion canon round for example, if the shield would be more sensitive to high velocity uranium rail rounds while the fusion based rounds would dissipate into the shield (may not be accurate, relevant or scientific, just for the idea).

Is there any difference between gun types with regards to the damage they do to shields vs their type, meaning a more powerful gun may not hit shields as much as a less powerful one ?

Cheers.
