Hi, I'm new here.

I heard about Evochron Mercenary searching for Space Sims with an open world and multiplayer in the game browser database of Mobygames.com.

They have a filter search system who let you orient the search to get closer to what you are looking for. Good feature. ;)

I was searching for games with a few features and this game popped up in multiple places (Reddit, Star Citizen, Diaspora, Steam).

Basically I was looking for games that were of the space genre, offered combat and "exploration" type features, had some form of persistent multiplayer (and not just plainly multiplayer combat if possible), 6 degrees of freedom etc ... and here I am !

I don't if anybody else had this experience but I discovered the Evochron universe through a recently found interest in sandbox games. The last 6 months have been Mount & Blade to Project Zomboid to Banished. Now I'm blowing stuff up in space for while! Hopefully a long while :)

I already knew about Evochron from one of its former incarnations many years ago, don't ask me what exactly it was. Almost forgot about it, even the name "Evochron" but suddenly got curious about what might have happened to it (also was looking for something to bridge the time to Elite dangerous) and so I fortunately remembered the name and tried the demo. This time I was blown away!

Not sure what I disliked in the former version, maybe the procedural ugly textures. Usually I'm not a graphics junky and can be happy with much more primitive stuff like roguelike games in ascii mode or ELITE in wireframe graphics but this one was just too ugly and left no place for imagination (like wireframe does). OTOH and IIRC this older version was much more unforgiving which I even liked better than in mercenary. I think if you scratched the docking doors a little bit too fast your ship was history. Also landing on a planet seemed a lot more tricky. But don't quote me on that, maybe I was just too lazy to read the manual or the manual was too hard to read for a non-native English speaker.

Edit:
Meanwhile I recalled what I disliked most in that elder version, it was mainly the lack of collision detection on towns. Made landing on planets feel too unrealistic and took away a large portion of what "planetary landing" would promise to me. Fortunately this seems widely solved now!

I played a lot of playstation with this one dude. He told me one day that he had been talking to this girl in the Philippines and wanted to go there and marry her. He knew that I have traveled alot and was x military. He asked if I wanted to go. I told him I didn't have the credits to make that kind of a trip on a drop of a hat. He said he'd foot the bill. I just had to go and watch his back. He's a wounded vet.

Never met this dude in real life. Only knew of him about a year. He drove his brand new Mustang down to Texas from Washington St. to have a meet-n-greet. Then we both loaded up and drove back. A month later we where on a plane.

Internet sucked in the Philippines and there is only so much swimming and walking that can be done. We needed some MP games. One day walking through the market in this back alley there was a bunch of "burned" PC games. I told him not to get that crap it would never work. About 40 games later we walked back to meet out lady's and they laughed at his purchase. A bunch of cut rate, burned, old computer games. I didn't even own a PC.

On my birthday later that week he got me a laptop. I told him that there is no way I would ever learn how to use this thing. My lady showed me how to turn it on.....little Ms. Phillipines, knowing more about PC's than me. On the desktop there was one game. Freelancer. He put the Crossfire Mod on it and I didn't stop playing that thing until it was complete. Tried MP but at that time the community was full of..well..not so nice people.

We still had that stack of PC games he bought, some he said worked and others didn't. I started digging through the pile. I needed my fix. :D In the rubble there was this one killer looking picture of space and a cockpit. Evochron Mercenary. He showed me how to install it and use the keygen and transfer files and yadda yadda. I got back to the states and bought it.

From a back alley in the Philippines while on a trip that never should of happened....in a pile of burned PC games......Evochron Mercenary.

like what's with the new star trek game
it's a damn first person shooter

what were they thinking lol

no wonder it's currently selling for 10 bucks

the only star trek games I think they ever did right were 25th anniversary and the sequel to it (can't remember the name)

I happened to come across EM while browsing space sim games on Steam - it looked interesting to me, but man was I surprised how good the gameplay was! I'm so glad I purchased it - I've done a little lurking before registering and it's nice to see all the resources the community has made together. It's only been a few days and I'm already losing sleep over this game! :)

I was searching around on Steam for a good space sim and happened to come across this gem. Took a chance on it, and haven't been happier. Definitely worth the admission cost!

I was reading a comparision about Elite Dangerous and Star Citizen. This game was mentioned and I thought what is that? After a quick search on Steam, I bought it. I love it.

I was Googling something like "spaceship flight game" (IIRC), and came upon a forum (not this one) discussing the best "free" ones out there.

This one had a Demo, so I went ahead and tried it out. Honestly, since the Demo has a timer on it anyway, I wouldn't see the harm in letting people try out Multiplayer for that time, either. (Just a small note, Vice.) Unless you're worried that they'd be dissuaded from buying after seeing how few servers there are. I could understand that, maybe.

Anyway, I liked how this one combined the free-exploration, sandbox feel of Minecraft with the trading feel of that text-based space game I played back in the 90s (Trade Wars).
I'm slowly beginning to warm up to battles, but I think that's because by day 4, I've pimped out my ship with the best Fusion gun you can make. >: )

Well, see you all in the 'Verse!

I found Sinbad/MCCON's youtube channel after Black Prophecy was shut down and I needed a new space sim/shooter.
