Mercenary from South Africa

Post by Landman »

Hey all,

I've just downloaded the demo of EM and must say I really enjoyed it. Just had a few hickups that I hope someone could help me with.

In the initial missions, there is a mission to destroy 20 asteroid; another to clean solar panels and another to deliver a package to a ship.

My "hickups" I encountered were with the latter 2 missions. I couldn't complete them. Firstly, the mission to deliver a package to a close command ship: I made my way to the ship and had no idea how to give the package? I opened the trade menu while floating in what appeared to be a transparent green cube. Nothing. I cancelled the contract and then moved on to cleaning the solar panels. I cleaned them with a tractor beam and nothing seemed to happen... Am I missing something?

All aspects of this game are brilliant, it's beyond what I expected and can't wait to have the fullgame purchased and downloaded onto my PC.

Also, what's the multiplayer like? And how active is the multiplayer community?

From South Africa to Space.
Over and out,

Landman :)

To deliver the item to the ship you have to fly into the green box (and I stop - you may not have to stop - not sure - but I do) then Jetison the Item and the ship get it and that completes the contract and you will be told so. Be careful if you have your own stuff in any cargo bays since the Jetison key will jetison them all and the ship will gladly take them. If you do have other cargo then bring up the Inventory Console and use the mouse to jetison the single bay Item for the ship.

The Solar panels take a little finesse. What I do is get close - about 100 meters (like you were mining asteroids) on the upper-left side of the Panels and stop. Then I switch to Intertial Mode and Slowly Strafe right (at speed of about 60) with the Tractor Beam locked to On. You will see each panel get "cleaned" and as you get to the right side use your strafe controls to move down to the next row and then strafe to the Left side and just repeat moving from one side to the other and down and back until you are done and will be notified.
If you go too fast and/or missing cleaning a square completely then you wouldn't be notified and you will need to try again or clean the one you missed.
With my method it never fails.

Solar panel cleaning requires a good eye. Sometimes you can go over a panel and it looks clean, but there is a speck of dust on it that you missed. You can't see it, but it's there, and they are sticklers about clean panels, so you might have to go over the thing again...and do a good job this time.

This is where what PaulB has said is true but not quite a good method.

When doing the cargo drop, the green box is always below and too the center of the ship awaiting delivery.

Secondly, you should never jettison cargo blindly, or as I did the other day hit the jettison cargo key by accident and loose 30M worth of equipment.

When you stop under the ship and you are in the green box press F3 ( inventory default ) then right click on the cargo slot that you are delivering, if you are in the right place you will only need to click once.

Too jettison cargo you have to click more than once, so this way you know you are only delivering with the single click.

Hi and welcome

1: you don't have to stop, you can deliver the package as you pass through the box, even moving quite quickly. Once you've got the technique sorted you can average 60 deliveries and hour:D

2: As said above, don't rush the cleaning - a partly cleaned cell is hard to spot but until you find it and clean it would don't finish the contract. If you get to the end and don't get the success message, I'd suggest you just start gain and clean them until the message appears (it's not likely that the part cleaned ell will be the last one ;))

Isn't that why I said "Be careful" and "use Inventory Console" if you have other Items in your cargo bays ?

Another helpful hint: Before jumping to the Waypoint I'm usually in the Station docking port #1 so I turn my ship to Heading 0 pitch 0 and set Inertial and make Set speed 200 and then press Inertial Forward until my Inertial speed is around 480 - 510, then I press Jump. You ship when it arrives will be heading (usually) head on toward the target ship.
I then use Strafe Down to begin my ship moving down toward the Green docking box. As I begin to close in and become aligned with the box I use Strafe Up to center in the center of the Docking box and then set my Strafe Up/Down indicators to 0 movement vrtically. Then as I start to close in on the Box I switch to IDS and when I'm about half way in I set IDS speed to 0 and coast to a stop - centered in the Box and then I use which ever method I need to jetison the supplies to the ship.

No having to fly around and make turns to get aligned - just a rather smooth entry process. It may take a little practice.
In some systems this method might be more difficult if there is a planet or someting behind the Ship that can make the Green box extremely hard to see. In those systems I exit the station and set my ship to Heading 90 ot 270 and pitch 0 and follow the rest of the procedure as above. This way you wil come in from the Side of the ship and the planet (or whatever) will not be in your view to confuse the image of the Green Docking box.
Those 2 methods never fail me and I frequently do Delivery contracts after I've done the Combat contracts and turned a system from Fair to Good, since the Delivery contracts seem to be one of the better contracts to further lower Guild/Rebel ratings and raise Navy/Energy/Miners ratings. I don't like to leave systems at the crossover opint from Fair to Good because I've had Olympus and Orion both revert back to Fair on me (Exiting with no Save and Re-Launching returned it to Good though - exceipt in the case of Olympus because I didn't catch the change before I had done a Save and Vice had to fix the file for me).

I rather thought you didn't have to stop but I never tried it :)
I figure why take a chance on flubbing the contract by misjudging and ejectnig the cargo outside the box - that would be about my luck.

Hello Landman! Welcome aboard!

There are as many methods for cargo deliveries as there are pilots delivering cargo. The end result being placing the cargo inside of the target vehicle's green box. Here's mine:

After accepting the cargo contract, I always check F-1 NavCon for the 'expected' location of the drop. (Many times, the target ship will be silhouetted against a star or a bright planet, making the green delivery box a real chore to find. Hence, I'll adjust my insertion angle so that the green box/ship is silhouetted against the black of deep space.) Once done with the F-1 routine, I'll check to see what my compass heading is, then turn to 36 degrees, if not already lined up. (This gives me a piece of the corner of the delivery box, and more 'area/time' to make the delivery.) I'll then set my IDS to X2 (about 1222 mps in a Raven frame with C3 engines) and launch inertial on the 36 degree heading. On the immediate warp drop-out, I'll then assume a 40 degree declination (down-slope),popping out of inertial flight, and punching up IDS X3 (as above - @ 1931 mps) while placing the green box just slightly below the compass header, watching the HVVM ball drop, and inclining my vector (up-slope) as the distance diminishes. If all I've got aboard is the 'target' cargo, I'll toggle kybd 'J' key to jettison the cargo into the green box, as I pass thru. Should I have other cargo aboard, I'll open the F-3 Inventory Console, mouse-hover over the 'target' cargo, and left click as I pass the first green blush of the perimeter of the delivery box. Sometimes, I may have to swing around and try it again, having missed the first time. Good thing is that the targeted delivery ship won't leave the AO 'til you've aced the delivery. :):cool: This presupposes of course, that the cargo drop is not a 'contested drop' - vis a vis - bad guys harrying you and the target cap ship. I'll then make other 'arrangements'... ;)

Each to his own. When I take a delivery contract my heading is already set to the gate I entered. So . . .

I open the nav map, jump, set the speed to around 2400 and lock onto the station after the jump before closing the nav map. Nose down to below the green box and level out when level with it. Unload the delivery as I fly through the box and hit the jump drive - back in the station in around a minute in total. This is a contract where you approach the target from any heading and you can use the box in any orientation

60 deliveries per hour :D

 Two things no longer complicate delivery contracts: (1) the receiving ship is now stationary and (2) your ship travels much slower under inertial. Thing 1 is pretty much self-explanatory. The good thing about Thing 2 is that you have a lot more time to figure out how to enter the box and deliver the cargo.

Hey all, Thanks for the assistance and welcoming. :)

Would you all recommend I purchase the game via Steam or via the website? Or won't it really make a difference?

I'd guess it depends on to whom you wish to give your purchase funds. One way is a percentage split, the other isn't - or so I'd presume. :)

 I'd do it via the website. When it comes to updating and modding the game, fewer questions (and less complicated) come from those who purchase the game locally.

Hi and welcome.

Some pilots have asked Vice for a Steam Key since they already had the game before
it came out on Steam. (Hint!;):P)
