Nav Map - frustrating

Post by Clifford »

Just starting out but trying to jump to another system.
I am at the constructor station in Saphire (in orbit around Erato II).
From here, on my nav map I can zoom out and at maximum I can see only +/- 8 sectors in all directions.
but from this perspective I can't see the jumpgate to Virgo. I have to fly-around in Saphire in hopes of "recentering" my map to get the jumpgate to Virgo to appear on the map?

I switch the nav map to "Sector" view but that seems to do nothing useful. I can't click on the systems to show me the Jumpate that leads to them.
Am I missing something or is this just the way the Nav Map works?

Why can't I freely move-around the map and see what I want to see, I am limited to a maximum zoom-out that is centered on my ship's current sector? And is there a way to click on something in Sector map view and tell me where the jumpgate is?

screenshots for illustration:

Here I am in Nav Map, maximum Zoom-out trying to find the Jumpgate to Virgo. There are a view Jumpgates visible on this map but they do not lead to Virgo.

Sector map doesn't give me any info about where to find Jumpgates:

Thanks for the link. I just watched the entire video, it has similar content to what was in the Tutorial. The mouse-movement map mode doesn't allow me to see more than 8 sectors away from my current sector. I guess if the jumpgate I need is not within +/-8 sectors of my current sector I'm just "out of luck". Maybe I can jump-around until the needed jumpgate appears within the range of my map.

I can't be the first person to notice this, what is everyone else doing to make jumps on the Sector map? maybe record Map-Log entries with all the jumpgates stored, so they can be selected when needed?

Edit: figured it out, and yeah I jumped-around until the gate became within my map's range, then marked it on my Map Log so I'd have it for next time.

Jump gates are usually in the direction of the lines on the quadrant map. So if you wanted to jump to Virgo first, as the map indicates, you'll need to jump to Thuban since that system is in the way with no line indicating a jump pathway directly from Sapphire to Virgo. Most of the gates are also within the +/- 8 sector nav sensor range displayed on the nav map (from the central planet the system is named after). So, zoom out until you locate the Thuban jump gate, right click to zoom in on that sector, right click on that jump gate icon to plot a jump point to that gate, then jump to and through that gate. Then the next step is just to repeat the same procedure once you're in Thuban to complete the next hop to Virgo.

Ahhhhhh... I got mixed-up on the system's name-labels on the sector map, I thought Virgo was the closest system and Thuban was the next one out, duh.

Thuban is a BAD place so be prepared to get away from the arrival area when you get there cause every Red in sight will be gunning for you.

Thuban is a "fly through" sector. Just keep your throttle high and blow through. Do not stop for fuel. Do not stop to pick up hitch-hikers.

Hehe, i just made my first jump (some hours ago) in that sector and saw so many enemies, i get scared.

Managed to enter (with ~2000 Speed) the station for repair and fuel.
I guess i need a better shield (have only class_1 shield) and for sure better weapons ... need some money to.

 A shield battery and class 10 shielding will help a lot. ;)
