Vice has changed the radar in the last update so you can estimate distances to other ships now via blip-size. Meanwhile I'm also quite comfortable with the radar though I'd still prefer "Elite"-style radar (but maybe I'm just too old to get rid of old habits).
My main gripe is the position on the periphery of the radar. I'm used to radars where your position is at the center instead.

I'm not sure I understand. Whenever I fly past an object, it moves from the front part of the sphere to the rear. Doesn't that mean my position is in the center? From post: 170370, Topic: tid=11330, author=picommander wrote:I'm used to radars where your position is at the center instead.

Oops sorry, you're right of course. Somehow I must have confused it with my first impressions... No, the real problem for me is that objects are always on the periphery, no matter if 700m or 7000m away. That was the reason why I initially thought I'm at the periphery as well. With this strange behavior it doesn't matter "where" I am in the radar globe anyway.

I frequently get ships within the sphere around the midmost circle - only after questioning Vice abot it - you can't judge distance by where a ship is within or outside the sphere except as a very basic idea based on the blip size. From post: 170379, Topic: tid=11330, author=picommander wrote:Oops sorry, you're right of course. I was specifically observing one target as it approached from the front. near the middle circle on the upper-right of center the range was farthest @ 5570.
Toward the outer ring at just left-below center - the Range was 3070.
And at outside the sphere altogether at the lower-left the Range was closest @ 2990 of those 3 screen shots I took.
So you can't use the Radar to judge Range - better keep an eye on the Description Range to avoid unpleasant surprises.

But that wasn't my point. It would be nice if it was possible to get an basic idea of the range of all ships in the vicinity by glancing at the Radar and have an idea which you might like to target first - and you can't do that since a ship that might seem to be closest might in fact be the farthest away. From post: 170394, Topic: tid=11330, author=Marvin wrote:Even if you could determine relative range from radar, it wouldn't give you what most pilots use when in combat: actual target range ... used to determine when to begin firing your cannon ... an important tactic considering how, if you start firing too early, your cannon will probably run out of energy by the merge.
If you had one hostile in front of you on Radar and one behind you you can't tell which is closest so can't make a judgement on which to attack first and even if you switch to List view that may tell you that one is closer but not which one so you have to rely on pressing the Nearest Hostile key since tou can't make an judgement based on observation of the instruments.
That's what a Radar is for.
I'm not saying Vice should try to change it to make it so - I'm just saying it would be nice if it "were" that way. But it wold probably require a better, more visual radar. Or if it wouldn't affect game performance then an automatic system that would make the closest hostile on the Radar blink somehow when one was detected maybe.

I use G key and R then the listing comes how i like it, plus the moving colors are just perfect, red yellow green,
, whenever a red comes under 2k i switch the g to target look..
i like the kind of radar in the down middle, with the moving dots inside, when you get the point about how it works it just fine
the map is kind of radar to, but even at x8 it looks like futur dont know that much about radar really
i like radars, put more of them, lets explore the full spectrum of distant detection and identification tools

Using nVidia 3DTV, it looks and works most excellent. The 3D depth makes it the most useful radar in any game I've played.
My only complaint is that I'd love to see it even bigger. It would be cool to create a mod so there is an option to pop it up on the left or right of the HUD as a much larger, free hanging sphere.

Are you connected to a TV to get the 3D from nVidia's 3DTV?From post: 170529, Topic: tid=11330, author=thebs wrote:Using nVidia 3DTV, it looks and works most excellent. The 3D depth makes it the most useful radar in any game I've played.
You might get the mod option to make the radar larger ... but I doubt it would be free-floating. Considering the size of your average cockpit, a free-floating ball would be awfully distracting. My only complaint is that I'd love to see it even bigger. Yes. It's an inexpensive LG 42LM3400 passive 42" that I bought last year. Does the job and didn't cost but a few hundred bucks. From post: 170531, Topic: tid=11330, author=Marvin wrote:Are you connected to a TV to get the 3D from nVidia's 3DTV?From post: 170529, Topic: tid=11330, author=thebs wrote:Using nVidia 3DTV, it looks and works most excellent. Yeah, I was reading through the forum. I'm going to come up with a couple of configurations that I like, and don't make me cross-eyed.From post: 170531, Topic: tid=11330, author=Marvin wrote:You might get the mod option to make the radar larger ... but I doubt it would be free-floating. In fact, the only thing that makes me cross-eyed are the horizontal/pitch indicators with the glasses. But that sorta makes sense since I'm staring out the screen. I might see if I can play with their depth as well.
In any case, the fact that the game offers a 3D cockpit and options to change size and depth is a nice change from many games don't even offer in the first place.
UPDATE ...
Using the "Big Radar" mod with the settings for my 720p 3DTV as documented in this post.

Also decided to use a "parabolic" pitch ladder which gives a better "immersion" when diving or climbing, at least to me. Might not be to the taste of others. From post: 170557, Topic: tid=11378, author=thebs wrote:...
I've setup my 720p 3DTV with the following using the "Big Radar". It's designed so the screens are more readable, and the Radar and Target pop-out. YMMV at different resolutions or with a different configuration.

The numbers Marvin posted in the above link - http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtop ... #pid170557 are working good for me so far in normal video.
