Why do I get attacked by random ships?

Post by bbs1980 »

Great game has wonderful potential. But I thought this was a space exploration game. Why am I getting attacked by random ships for no reason even though I have no cargo, and they will receive absolutely no benefit from my death, especially since I am actually not affiliated with anything in the game, and or a threat to any of their resources. This goes against any logical decision any living creature no matter what species in any time period ever observed, and or postulated by any theorist.

I wonder how is it a player is to be able to explore this wonderful universe in a realistic manor. Is there a ship, playstyle, device, mod, or liscence that I can use to allow the AI to simply go about their business until either I threaten them or I enter a region where its clearly at war, and or where rebels dominate so I am to expect attacks in that region.

Please, please, please, please, tell me there is a fix for this. Tell me I am just missing this item in the game. Please tell me this space sim does not go against all logic and in essence has the most unrealist AI ever produced. I just want to be able, to trade, explore, race, clean arrays, be a taxi, all wihout being random attacked for no reason. Please help.

Why do I get attacked by random ships?

Hello and welcome,

First, you simply need to learn where and how it is safer to travel vs where it isn't. In terms of the 'why's', they are largely based on territorial and historical divisions within humanity as they colonized the quadrant. Here is some information on the topic of why certain ships in certain regions will attack you while others won't (taken from past discussions and debates on the topic over the years):

... If you are from an opposing territory (or allied with it), you will be attacked by the enemy of that territory. By default, you are from Sapphire, an Alliance territory and your reputations start out as allied to that group. This automatically makes you the enemy of forces that oppose the Alliance.

... You start out allied with factions that are against hostile to others and their interests (either because of past conflicts with those factions or simply because you are viewed as a trespasser). For example, if you were affiliated with the US Navy in 1944, why would the Japanese Navy attack you, but the US Navy not? It's the same reason(s) many Richton and Federation territories (and their Navies) will attack you, but Alliance/Sapphire's won't. If you are from an opposing territory (or allied with it), you will be attacked by the enemy of that territory.

As for options to avoid conflict when you don't want to, there are indeed equipment items and tactics available to you including stealth devices, bribing, proper jump drive management, and high speed travel with the IDS off. You can do a lot of trade and exploration without ever having to fire a shot, but it does require a different set of tactics. For now, if you want to approach gameplay as you describe, you'll likely just need to fly faster, avoid lingering too long, keep your distance from hostiles, and plot safer jump points. As you build your wealth and capabilities, you can then move on to acquiring items that can make travelling through even the most dangerous sections of the game's universe much safer.

Flying a ship with an engine capable of 3300+ speed or flying in Inertial mode at 3300+ speed should outrun any NPC attacks/missiles - except for attacks that are head-on. ;)

I just finished watching a news report on Syria. The Evoverse reflects reality ... where there are friendly places and not-so-friendly places for you to explore.

Thanks for all the helpfull reply. So it seems that there is a safe way. I am very relieved. Will try getting better engines to allow me to run, and hopefully buy a stealth device. I was not aware that there were some safe regionis. My experience so far is that every jumpgate I try from the initial one, I am immediatly attacked by some random ship. That lead me to believe this would be the case for all. Especially since every gate that I tried from the start zone were alliance. So if there were hostiles in every gate then this did not make sense, and to Marvin.... this did not reflect reality. As it appeared that in the evoverse friendly territory is not fiendly when you are attacked by random inhabitants for no reason at all. What you have there is a chaotic free for all, that really has no point having a designation or alliance, etc. As being of that type you still get attacked, why label it.

Either way I don't want to harp on all the hard work that was put into the game. Its just this reputations system really kills the realism that I know the developers where going for, and it breaks my heart. Does anyone know if there were any mods created to address hostility, and the lack of any real territorial control? lets say restrict the attacks for when you are in friendly territory to rebels, and when you are in hostile territory its a free for all with random ships attacking you? If this mod does not exist, with your folks experience is this something within the realm of the modding community. If so, I am willing to put in the time to learn, and teak. Thanks again for the great replies, and believe it or not I am a huge fan of the game

Hi and welcome.

As far as I know you can not mod anything that affects game-play, that would be kind of cheating.

Just keep moving and you'll be "safe", or join MP and others can watch your six ;-)

The four reputation values are hard-coded ... the file which controls them is compiled to keep players from peeking at all the other goodies included in the same file. But there are gates in Sapphire which lead directly to Fair star systems ... the safest being Lambda. Or, if you care to jump through one of the Moderate systems (as fast as possible), do this:
  • Set your IDS multiplyer to x5.
  • Target a gate into Moderate territory.
  • Adjust pitch and heading as required for quick-jumping.
  • Throttle up to full.
  • Engage Inertial.
  • Initiate a hyperjump to the gate.
  • Once through the gate, engage afterburner 'till you're past the local threat.
  • Target the next gate.*
  • Rinse and repeat.
That should get you into friendlier territory unscathed.

* If your jump drive won't get you all the way to the next gate, use autopilot ... keeping in mind that, if the autopilot changes your heading/pitch, you'll need to readjust it for the final jump through the next gate.

Are you sure about "theorist" was just a typo and he actually meant "terrorist" instead? I'm not. ;)

. . . though of course you'll be past the incoming hostile in an eye blink - unless both of you refuse to chicken out and meet in the middle - no offense intended RC :P

I'm thinking that you have various starting points in the game: merchant, military, etc.

I think it would be cool if you could instead choose whether you were going to be allied with the Alliance, Federation, or maybe some guild or rebel faction or something. Instead of starting in Sapphire, you might start in Thuban or Olympus Prime.

Maybe the option would be for advanced players who want an extra challenge.

None taken. I DO reserve the right to 'chicken out', though I rarely take it. :P

Very good idea! Somehow it even seems very natural to me and I wonder what speaks against it. Probably to keep the small player base together as close as possible? I think a little hostility can't hurt and probably motivates towards clan building... ;)

As for hard-coding a change in the five factions or four global reputation levels, probably a lot. As for limiting the number of clans to Alliance, Federation and maybe a few others, that option has been discussed ... and one I personally liked. But the majority sometimes rules and, in this case, the majority liked to keep their own individual clans.

I can't imagine many new players lasting our steepish learning curve in Thuban! ;) Perhaps Sapphire could be given 'freeport' status - remaining neutral and safe. When they are ready players could choose their allegiance and transfer over to it will all their material possessions and hard earned experience and knowledge.

Linked to this - I agree with Marvin about having fewer clan loyalties (and Fed or Alliance are the obvious ones) would mean more chance of having both factions online together and therefore more chance of CvC wars. How's about this: each clan would choose either be part of the Federation or the Alliance, but locally could act autonomously. If a Fed clan (say) is attacked by an Alliance clan, all Fed clan pilots would come to its rescue and all Alliance clan pilots would join the attacking force.

There would potentially be a couple of positive outcomes. More chance of CvC fights because more chance of pilots from both factions online at the same time and more chance of big fights which might be attractive to the whole community. As is well known, I'm not exactly an asset in small furballs but I can do my bit in a bigger fight because my contribution has less immediate impact and there's likely to be someone who is more my skill level floating (or even flying) around :D

A clans alliance could be coded in the pilot callsign like the clan is at the moment.

Players would of course have the choice of being Indies, as would clans.

:)
