A day for the Noob
I had a ton of fun today. I also met a slew of new pilots. Some are returning, some are new. Here is what I know.
Kkabb: Young cat. Plays with a PS2 controller. Has put a couple weeks in and is not a bad pilot and fun to have as a wingman.
BoldHeart: Another young cat and also a returning player: Intuitive and motivated. He stuck it out yesterday and got his Military Rank to 50 and is now flying that Wraith.
Skyrat: Still has his original copy of...I forget the name but has a lot to do with the Elite Franchise. He's easy going, very polite, and likes to fight.
Joe: This guy is chill. Has an accent and was down to fight the whole time he was on. He is a new recruit to EM.
At one point all of these pilots and myself where doing missions in the Talison War Zone. It was fun. We where moving slow. Practicing saving and filling missiles after each mission and finding heading for fast docking. Bold and Joe traded in there starter Civ frames for the starter Mil frame. Skyrat was in a Star Master and did very well in it. Kkabb took my advice that I got from the
Rubber Chicken. He switched to a Legacy frame and decked it out for combat. I didn't want him to lose his crew so a Mil switch wasn't feasible.
*PRO TIP #1
As long as you have one of the missiles you want equipped to your ship, any War Zone Carrier will sell them. So keep one in your cargo bay just in case you blow through them so you can refill on your missile of choice.
*PRO TIP #2
If you jump into a station that doesn't sell what you want. Jump at least 2 sectors away and back in. That should reset the load out of the station in question.
*PRO TIP #3
To raise your Military Rank you must go to a War Zone. Accept a mission that has waypoints. Each waypoint completed is 1 military rank. You must complete the entire mission to receive the points previously earned on that mission. If you die.....you lose them.
I'm gonna say this now. If you are just starting and want to start out with guns blazing, go ahead and get the first Military frame. You are going to learn how to fight two times as fast in a light ship. If you are fighting in a heavy frame and you adjust your heading the reaction time of your ship is about half of that of most of the Mil Frames. Learn to control your speed and approach and then move up. A little at a time. By the time you have the Chimera frame unlocked you should be a pretty proficient pilot and the confidence to use any frame you want to fight. Just to give an example of the capabilities of the available frames; R.C. is a 4+ year veteran and uses the Wraith (the level 50 Military Frame) for PvP. He is also one of the most well known killers on Ceti Alpha V. Bigger isn't necessarily better. Learn to fight in a light frame and learn your style before jumping into a Star Master and thinking you are a tank. Driving a tank has it's own skill set. How can you drive a Mack Truck if you can't drive a Prius?
Also your equipment is important. If you are a combat oriented pilot but don't want to lose the ability to do side quests this is the best setup period.
1) Shield Battery x5
2) Repair Sys 3
3) Canon Relay Sys
4) Canon Heatsink
5) Tractor Beam
6) Anit-Missile Sys
7) Mantis Jump Drive
This loadout does several things for a new pilot. (not really that new because an Anit-Missile Sys can cost 6 to 16 million) By using this loadout in a Military frame you have one cargo slot for recovery missions and a Trac Beam. The Canon Heatsink in combination with the Canon Relay Sys makes your guns very effective. Of course, the Repair Sys and the Shield Batts allow you to survive and "heal" in a fight.
The Trac Beam also opens other avenues. Gather loot after a fight. Farm asteroids. Loot cashes. Farm the surfaces of planets and many other things. Use it and keep it. The only time you should drop this item is for a PvP only ship. For any other type of game play you'll want one.
An Anti-Missile Sys? The only answer is, "Hell yes." It is the best insurance you will have against missiles. It uses your energy to "cook" an incoming missile. I'm sure at the start you won't know how to kick into inertial mode and then turn to shoot down the missiles that will hit you. (not all missiles are a threat) Also when you rotate you expose a side of your ship. Can you augment your shields without panic pressing? So having an Anti-Missile Sys allows you to make "mistakes" as a new pilot.
Also this setup allows for an open equipment slot so you can experiment with a different piece of gear. You can try to use a Cargo Scanner 5 for certain type of missions or for picking your victims and taking there cargo.
I personally use the Stealth Generator. I love this thing. It has so many uses. You can stealth and do spy missions without every firing a shot or being shot at. You can Stealth when you are in trouble and as long as you don't panic and hit your thrusters you are safe. Just switch a shield pack into your secondary slot and break stealth when you are ready, pop that shield pack, and you're back in it. You ever been jumped by two or three ships on a planets surface? Pop that Stealth Gen (reminds me of an episode of Ancient Alieans, "They are invisible 4th dimensional beings."

) and you are out. Just head to space and jump to the other side of the planet.
You can also try the Build Constructor. It is the Swiss Army Knife of many veterans. Get fuel on demand, repair your ship, fill your energy, make drones mine asteroids, or pop a huge shield that makes you instantly safe. Also, and probably the best feature, is the Sensor. Ever lost an objective ship? Ever wondered how safe you where or who is around you? Felt worried about getting jumped on by another Pilot? Just pop that Sensor and BOOM! you have vision for days.
Exploit?
While fighting yesterday I wanted to make sure these pilots had some start up capital. Skyrat and Kkabb where loaded so they didn't need anything. I traded Bold 10 million and one Exodus missile. At the last second I backed out because he said he had a full compliment of Exodus missiles. It was odd he still got the Missile in his cargo and the ten million. I still had all my credits and my missile. We tried to duplicate this several times to see if it was a true exploit so we could inform Vice. We never managed to get a result. I am not sure if it is possible to do this and if you find a way can you report it Vice it can be removed?
