Both but mostly contracts. My choice is limited here since I still suck in escort jobs. It boils down to either killing up to 12 enemies or an ace fighter with his gang. It's a big difference though "where" I take these contracts. From my own station 12 enemies would be an isolated task. Meanwhile I found a strategy that is almost risk free, just need some (read: a lot) patience and time, in other words: a little boring. In Tranquil, where I bought me into the orbital station (for 12 Million, one of the reasons why I'm such a poor churchmouse), all fights take place in orbital range with all kinds of random enemies but also allies, including battle ships, cruisers and trading ships which is quite *interesting*. Here I usually prefer to go wild (and die often but have some fun :P)
And here I train the basics of switching between IDS and inertia mode which isn't necessary with the other method.

My main problem seems to be that miners are noticeable underpopulated in Pearl, their contracts are rare and not efficient, reputationwise. Even if bribing would work in the long run (I'll try with more but lower fees) it's just not easy to meet one.

Edit: To be more specific to your question Paul, amount of kills out of contract seems enormous, didn't count though. Killing by contracts gives basically 1% per contract if its for Navy. For Miners it's much worse, something around 1% for 3 contracts and even less when the amounts of enemies are low (like 5 or 6, so it appears to me at least). Again, this is only true for this certain situation in Pearl.

For miners, try looking for contracts in a sector with an asteroid field ... it might help. For contracts which take you close to a planet, try Ace contracts offered at a city. For global reputation as it concerns systems other than Pearl ... it wasn't the reason I mentioned that most players start out changing their global rep in a less hostile system ... some place where you have more contracts to choose from and where the number of enemy ships involved are less.

How did you get contracts in Pearl?
I must say that so far I've only docked on Port Oasis and Pearl Hidden but I can't get contracts - it says because of my rating.
Or maybe I need to go back and check again because my rating is somewhat higher now than when I 1st checked the Available Contracts there.
Though I'm not sure I want to tackle Pearl. I like doing fun things in the game and I fight when I have to and I like to be able to "hold my own" - but I'm not really the kind that wants to become an ace combat pilot and just do that all the time.
I'm more the kind that "you don't shoot me and I won't shoot you".

Pearl is hostile by default and also still to me (I'm working on it but that's looking like a loooooooooong way to go, the miners are the main problem here). I couldn't afford the high station fee each time I would do a contract so I built my own station here, problem solved. Currently I'm working in the nearby warzone in Arvoch though. Your reputation in warzones seem to be always good, at least the ones I visited so far. Main reason why I'm improving my military rank are my plans to come back to Pearl in a decent military ship. Pearl is where the story continues, not sure if I really go the long route though to pacify the system. If I wanted support from the Navy here I already could do so (Navy is all green to me now).

When it comes to fighting I'm like you but EM's fighting is challenging me so I just can't resist. I don't expect ever becoming an ace either but as long as I can see improvements it's a lot of fun! (though what currently improves is mainly the number of mistakes I recognize :P)

But when it's all done and I don't feel I can't improve anymore be sure I'll switch to full time explorer mode again. That's where my heart is beating for. Looking forward to it... :)
