Hi All,
I am pleased to inform you that I am now the proud owner of EM and so far have amassed the sum of 500,000 cr. I feel (although a little shaky) I can traverse space and mine asteroids now. Both at home and also near Erato as well.

Couple questions though:

While I was mining my little heart out, humming a happy space tune, I was approached and was informed that there were miners upset with me and I had better watch my back. Second time I was told that, with a reputation like mine I had better watch my back.

What or who have I upset and what could I have possibly done to upset someone already? A little scary, huh?

What do you think is going to happen to me?

Thanks and I await your answer.

Kindly, Grizz(Bear42)

Or just a wild guess: Did you probably take any quests to destroy asteroids and didn't care if there were any NPC miners leeching? Dunno if they actually take care but when I started (as a miner like you) I tried not to blow up asteroids were other miners were busy at. At least I never got that message... *shrug*

Nothing other than one mission to deliver something to a waiting ship nearby. I was mining one asteroid, another ship stated mining the same one. All at once I noticed red cracks started showing up in the asteroid and I quit immediately, moved to another asteroid. Watched out of the corner of my eye for a while and the asteroid never blew up. Outside of that one mission that I did delivering an item I have only been traveling and mining. Main reason is to make some money.

I will start paying closer attention and look for the red. I didn't think anything would happen like that in Sapphire. But I'll be watching and heeding your advice.

It was a wild guess, not an advice. ;) Anyway, welcome to our cozy corner of this universe!
Did I say cozy? Just kidding, it's actually pretty harsh. But the other (human) pilots seem all to be quite friendly (NOT kidding this time). :)

Red Cracks???
That only happens if you shoot it with your Guns to destroy it.
If you did that while an AI was mining it I suppose they might get upset.
If I'm on a contract to destroy 20 asteroids I try not to destroy one that is being mined by another ship - or one that's very close - more in case I damage or kill the AI than worry about p***ing them off. That never really occurred to me but I guess Vice could have that in the game design.

Wasn't shooting. Was only mining and then the other guy showed up and started mining as well. After a little while I noticed the red cracks and left him go to it. Haven't done the destruction mission yet.

I keep getting the mission for a race. To tell the truth I'm not really interested in racing. Maybe later.

Well, now I'll be paying attention to my six. Even in Sapphire.

Thanks, Grizz(Bear42)

:o Was this in single player? 'Cause I've never seen an AI blow up an asteroid.

No one seems to listen to what Bear42 actually said. LOL
He said (2 times) he didn't blow up anything, also no asteroid.
He also said nothing about an AI shooting a roid.
Probably better read his post(s) again. ;)

Warnings to watch your back in totally 'green' areas seem to be nothing more than flavor text added to the ask-info feature. I've gotten many idle threats in the Sapphire and Atlas systems. The only time reds happen in good rep systems are if you or another player (in MP) shoot them, then they won't calm down until ALL players leave the system (via gate). Once everyone is out, then unless a player does have bad rep there, returning ought to reset all to green.

The same applies if you accidentally take out an ally AI in the War Zones. They'll come back red until ALL leave the area, then returning resets to green.

I have heard it said that green/yellow AI can 'choose' to switch threat level once they've gotten close (ya' know give you the ol' Julius Ceaser) and attack, but I've never seen it.

Also, in a hostile system it just happened to me that an AI pilot from a faction I have a reputation of 100% with (Energy) was red and threatened me with the words "This was your last mistake". I did not shoot at him by accident nor could I see any other reason for such a strange behavior. Never saw this before or after that again. There seems to be a small probability for AI to act wired. Pretty cool if that is actually the case...

Yes he did, but then again an asteroid does not turn red unless someone is
shooting at it. I've never seen an AI pilot do that either.
Also, not only guns destroy an asteroid, your laser will too.;)

So, if this was in MP, another player might have done it.

I think sometimes the station traffic controllers and other pilots think they're giving friendly advice by saying "watch your back out there, mercenary." I don't think that it occurred to them that this might be taken as a threat.

Then again, they're AI, so I doubt that anything has ever occurred to them.

Uaaagh, that one goes to my account. I was the one who didn't read thoroughly (missinterpreted the "red cracks"). Sorry :(

Edit: You say you can destroy a roid with your mining laser? Or do you mean beam leaser? In the latter case the cause could be an awry configured device (triggering both mining and weapon beam laser with the same trigger).

Unless something is horribly amiss with the key bindings, the beam cannon and the mining/tractor beam are on separate keys/toggles by default. AI/NPC's do not spontaneously give information, threats, or warnings. There has to be a rather concerted effort on the human pilot's part to get anything out of them anyway. 'Radio chatter' on the other hand, may include warnings to pilots about the presence of bad guys in their immediate area (mostly common enough in Fair to Hostile systems.). Should one be heard whilst operating in Good rep areas, like Sapphire or Atlas, I'd say chalk it up to an overly enthusiastic radio broadcaster. ;)

If I've not said it before, welcome aboard Bear42! :):cool:

 That would surely explain part of the mystery. On very rare occasions, I've heard just the opposite: how quiet it was ... but in a not-so-quiet system.

Thank you so much for your feedback. Now I'm really glad I found EM and this community. I apologize that I wasn't more specific on how I received the threats.

I was in SP mode. "checked the trade button" and asked for encrypted message. That's where I received the threats. Also received another message that said if I was allied with the rebels he had something for me. I didn't know how to or even if to respond to that message. So I didn't.

Please bear in mind that I have just started and my newness to EM makes me pretty fearful of messing up so I pay pretty close attention to what's happening to me. I have downloaded every manual, tips publication and am studying them intensely at this time. Am only comfortable with traveling and mining. Some day I will be looking to join a clan and also be wanting to do some MP stuff, but for right now I'm concentrating almost entirely on reading and mining until I become more proficient.

In regard to mining, I have now made over 600,000 Cr and have never seen any other asteroid show red cracks. After I left the guy just kept on mining and the asteroid never blew up.

Have been thinking that maybe I could make a connection with someone on TeamSpeak to kind of mentor me along during this start up phase??

Anyway, thanks so much and looks like I may have found a great program and community to connect with.
Grizz(Bear42)

P.S. Am currently running EM Tools, Evometrics and Travel Buddy on my second monitor. Still don't have Evo metrics and Travel Buddy working properly , but really like using EM Tool.

dont hesitate to try multiplayer.
it's no more dangerous than single player and you can get all the help and tips you want from other players there.

when you first join MP, you may get blown up once by another player but this is just a right of passage. not a hostile act.

 So, you actually attempted to get information from an AI via F4 ... most new guys shy away from it. The response you received was one of many ... quite often you'll be given coordinates to an uncharted star system (for a fee, of course). As for problems with the Travel Buddy, check to make sure you have MS .NET Framework 4.0 or above installed on your computer. If you have version 4.5, you can use any version ... but, if you only have version 4.0, you need the 2014 version.

This way I found my first uncharted system (on day 2 or 3 I believe). Just the coordinates of course, wasn't able to fly such a long distance at this point. If you're interested, I think it's not in your database. Pretty boring system though, a sun and one planet (no town and stormy). It's N602 at SX 244, SY -31, SZ 1519. Don't jump directly to this coordinates, aim to one sector beside otherwise you'll crash into the sun.

Edit: I thought I'm an explorer type of player, that's why I started with EM in the first place. But then I found some fun in space battles, which are very challenging and need some time to master (I'm just doing my first steps for a couple of days now). I'll strongly doubt I'll ever become good enough for PVP though... :o

I wanted to keep this "secret" for the fresh and unspoiled new players to find by themself but now where you've already revealed it... :P

 I've queried a number of AI pilots, paid a lot of fees, and never received the same set of coordinates twice. Ergo, lots of "secrets" are still to be revealed.

Awesome! Can't wait until finished my combat "education". Then you can be sure I'll turn back to 100% explorer mode again. But for now there's still so much to learn...
