Help, cannot upgrade my ship.

Hi,
I started this time as military and was issued with a Ferret.
I have now progressed to Commander level and want to upgrade my ship to Wraith.
I have no assembly points and cannot downgrade any of my equipment to get the necessary 420 (I think) for the Wraith.
I have tried hitting the Trade and Build button, but nothing happens.
Please tell me what I am doing wrong.

First, make sure the ship you're upgrading to is available (not grayed out). Second, drag your selection to the center screen ... after storing (at the trade station ... not in a cargo bay) whatever gear you've already acquired. Third, check that you have enough credits to buy the upgrade.
