Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself.
Male, 38, Norwegian and haven't played space sims since 1994-1995. I have tested several over the years but haven't found anything I liked but I think that has changed now. WC: Privateer was my favorite and I can smell some similarities to this game. I want freedom above anything else, and that Evochron Mercenary can offer in abundance.
Discovered this game by accident and I am enjoying the demo at the moment. Pretty steep learning curve but I'm getting by slowly but steadily and taking it at my own pace.
At first I struggled with the IMG race contract and I cursed it with all my strength, but then I realized that controlling the ship better is just one of those things that's going to pay off in the long run. I made it after 7 retries. I next figured out that if I had investen in a very cheap wing upgrade and a cheap agility frame the whole thing would've been much easier. Lesson learned!
I next got thoroughly whooped by two enemy fighters but miraculously managed to kill them on the second try, believe me I'm still trying to figure out how...
What I did was to enter the fight with ~1.2k speed and turn off inertia thingy (space) and sent a rocket in the first guy while shooting him with all I had, beam and particle, as he flew by. His rockets missed because I had no heat signature and used those CM's (which I suspect is for that purpose?).
The second guy had to be gunned down because I had no more rockets, I only carry one and or none usually. I want to watch some instructional vids on this subject because what I've done so far is a mix between panic and instinct.
Lesson NOT learned!
So, what I'm asking is simply is there any advanced combat video tutorials that can teach me how to properly use speed, maneuverability and inertia on/off to properly win dogfights?
PS. I've figured out how to more or less financially support myself and have managed to earn quite a few millions by doing different tasks. I also have a fairly decent amount of cash tied up in my ship as well. Combat is the only part I struggle because I usually don't live long enough to learn anything from the fight. I am great at escaping though...

Hello
Hi Sabatasso, welcome to the game and forum!. I'm originally relatively speaking Dutch and have been in the U.S.A. for about 24 years.
SeeJay has a lot on his Website and some important information on it about Combat. 1. Know your Enemies Ships Weapons, Ranges and effects, Speed and Distances and know how to control them and use at your advantage. Know your Ships, Weapons, Ranges and effects, Speed and Distances, Agility and Energy and Shield management.
It seems like a lot but with practice and learning these it becomes very easy once you understand the mechanics involved!......

Hello
After looking at RedFalcon's tutorial I figured I wasn't really doing anything wrong but my ship just can't handle the punishment at the moment if I'm up against more than two opponents. I've opted for a small ship with a lot of speed, agility and cargo space since I'm technically a trader type, technically I wanted to become a smuggler but I haven't actually find anything to smuggle yet.
I'm using a particle gun with 700 range, IceSpear (or something) and a relatively crappy beam because I haven't found anything better. I've seen better guns but they've also had a lot shorter range so I'm sticking with my IceSpear (or IceLance? )for now. As earlier mentioned I only carry one rocket because I need the slots for CM's and utility stuff.
I have Shield Generator level 3, Shield 5, some kind of gun battery *something* that gives two guns and more energy for weapons, repair bot and a lot of non-combat stuff.
What I basically experience is that my aim to become a jack-of-all-trades doesn't really work well for combat perhaps? My ship is perfect for cruising around and doing menial tasks, mine or whatever and I've found a really rewarding trade route so I'm all set for money. Is the only way to get bigger, badder and "combaty" if I want to take contracts that involve violence? I kinda hoped that maneuverability and agility was an option to mitigation and tanking to be honest. If it isn't I'd like to know sooner than later. I'll fiddle around a bit and try to get a better beam weapon to fizzle those pesky shields faster so I don't take so much damage. I guess I should explore and try to find some ports that offer better stuff.
Quick question, is there a catalogue of sorts that display all available ship parts and weapons? I've only seen level 3 fulcrum drive and shield generator for example. Does it go to lvl10?
PS. Seems like my old rusty wing commander skills are somewhat working in this game but I definitely need to evolve and explore the more advanced game mechanics. To be honest it was the slide move that sold me to this game, inertia on off thing, brings back memories to "tilde" slide on Privateer. Good stuff!
Thanks for all the welcomes by the way. I haven't bought the game yet but I suspect I will as it's looking promising. Quite a time sink though, with two kids and a wife oO
