I'm postng this becase I read a thread where a new guy was turning off NAT in his Router so he could play EM MP.
You should NEVER turn off your NAT or put your router in DMZ.
Very risky - security wise.
It's been several years since I did this (had to do it in AW to allow user to user file transfers), but I hope this will point people in the right direction.
First thing you need to do if it's not posted here or in the Docs someplace (and it should be) is find out which port(s) EM needs for MP.
Then go to this site and look up your Router anf how to Port Forward. (Someone should set up and entry on the site for EM - there tons of games and App instructions listed there a a lot of routers)
Portforwarding.com
Just find your router there and if nothing else look at some examples of other programs that are port forwarded and set up and entry on your router's Port Forward tables for EM.
It's usually pretty easy to do.
Sorry I can't give more details but I'm on Mobile Wireless these days and dont' use a router anymore, nor do I know what ports EM needs open, and each brand router can be somewhat different to set up. But hope it helps.
Maybe others can fill in the blanks.

Is this a common enough issue to merit an entry in the Hints&Tips Guide?

This information, including the ports and reference to portforward.com, has been on the game's official website for quite some time. It is available here: http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/faq.htm#11
For much more information on configuring and using the multiplayer mode, the instructions included with the game are a detailed resource of information. They can be accessed from the main menu via 'Training' > 'Close game and view instructions' or by opening the 'ReadMe' file in the game's install folder.
