MP races?

Post by Nigel_Strange »

Is it possible to challenge other players to a race? It would be interesting to have a race with multiple human opponents....

I mean, if you're into that multiplayer thing.

Yep. Although I've not participated, the facility exists for a player/pilot to craft/lay-out a race course in MP-space. That I know of, Marvin has some experience in the matter; him having put one down for an LMS-type of event a little after the race paradigm got re-tweaked - the first time - IIRC. :)

The only racing events in MP is against
other players. Can't race AI in MP.

I don't think you can challange more than
1 player / race tho. Not 100% sure so I stand
corrected if I'm wrong.

It would be neat if there were some permanent racetracks set up somewhere. Maybe one in an asteroid field (or cave!).

 Supposedly, you can have more than one person in a race. I think whoever starts the race must ask all the others ... 'though I'm not sure ... having only raced one person at a time. I've never tried setting up a course inside a cave but I have set up a few inside an asteroid field ... somehow the course always manages to miss the asteroids. But the coolest setup was inside a planet's atmosphere ... where going too fast can cause your ship to burn up.

It's been on thread wishlists for a while: It would make practice much easier :D

In a cave would be intriguing! :P In an asteroid field would certainly give an incentive to stay 'in the tube'!

I didn't realise that you could choose where to set up a course! :)

There's potential for a deadly tag game. The 'prey' has to escape the attacker(s) by flying through a race course. Both start several kilometers away from the start with either attackers or prey nearer to the course. Not just a matter of legging it as fast as possible to the tube - the prey would have to ensure sufficent head start to be out of range in the tube!

If it was possible to set up more than one course we could have relay races! Or with a permanent course, relay races through the same tube each time. :D

:)

How does one set up a course? Is this something you do in-game or through some configuration?

From the game instructions/read-me file:

"Multiplayer also lets you race other players. Unlike the contract option to race AI controlled ships in the single player mode, the multiplayer mode provides a race challenge option in the trade console. To race another player, establish a trade connection with them, then click on 'Send Race Challenge'. The player that sends the challenge will establish where the race course is placed. It will be placed in front of the sending player at a heading of 0 and pitch of 0. As each player passes through all boxes, a text message will be displayed indicating the name of the player. The player who completes the course first is the winner and players can arrange prize credit amounts or other rewards to be traded after the race is finished. It's recommend that you place the course carefully and if you need to reposition it, simply open the trade console and submit the race challenge again once you are at the new location you want. Other players can participate in the same race by having one player send multiple challenges. The player sending the challenges needs to remain in the same location while setting up the race, otherwise separate courses will be placed at different locations."

So, you place the starting point, but after that, the course does it's thing.

It would be interesting to put one in an asteroid field, especially if you have to blast some asteroids to clear the way!

 I've tried, numerous times. Somehow the course always manages to miss the asteroids ... but you can keep trying!
