Demo: File Operation Error - Windows 7 64-bit.

Post by I Assassin II »

I recently downloaded the demo and I get past the intro cutscene and the game crashes and says, "File Operation Error, Decryption Error", then a bunch of numbers. If I were to buy the full version on Steam would I experience this issue? If so, how would I go about fixing it?

The demo will effectively function the same as the full game, so you'll need to find out what is interfering with the game first.

A file operation error indicates one of several possibilities:

- The download and/or install is corrupt. Make sure to download the demo directly from the official website and install it correctly (try the default location first).

- Something else running on your system is interfering with the game's file operations, preventing it from accessing the file(s) that it needs. Check your background security programs and make sure the game has sufficient permissions to manage its own files.

- You are using corrupt game files from some other source. Clear out the c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary folder entirely, then reinstall and relaunch the demo to try again.

- Your system is nearly out of hard drive space and/or memory. Make sure your system meets the minimum requirements and has sufficient space to handle the game.

I installed it directly from the website and only used the default locations to install it. I'll try and figure out if any programs are preventing it from running.

Also try clearing out the \\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary folder step, that could help remove any of the corruption left behind from external factors (ie security program) that may have damaged one or more of the game's files.

Also, if it continues to give you trouble and you can't find the cause, follow the steps here to send me a msinfo report on your system and I may be able to offer additional advice once I know more about your system and the software you are running: http://www.starwraith.com/evochronmercenary/faq.htm#8

I said windows 7 in the title, but I meant to say windows 8. I'm gonna try and find some solutions now.

I got it to work. For some reason, I don't have permission to modify anything directly under local disk, so I installed it somewhere else.

Ah ok, that makes more sense then. Thanks for the follow up and information. Also, if you are using Windows 8 (original), you'll want to either update to 8.1 or use the 'Windows 7 compatibility' mode with the game to prevent a memory limitation in the original Windows 8 that can cause CTD's when trying to descend into planets.

I'll likely update the thread subject and move this over to the technical support section soon.
