Hi guys!
My current pastime in Evochron is to seek out new worlds and new civi-- no wait, I mean seek out abandoned cargo containers, and ship wrecks!
Here is my question: Is there a disadvantage to searching in multiplayer, versus singleplayer? Do containers "respawn"? Is it possible I would see things in singleplayer, but they're not appearing in multiplayer as they've already been taken by another player?
Thanks!

Question about scavenging/salvage
Hi and welcome.
Containers respawn both in MP and SP after some time.
If you have a Science Ops as a crew member, he will point out directions when you enter a sector with "interesting" stuff.
On my website you can download a "Container Finder" that will get you to it in 2 jumps. (Spreadsheet with instructions).

Question about scavenging/salvage
Just to be clear, I'm not doing a "contract" ... I'm literally flying around the rings of Saturn, and over the surface of Mars inch-by-inch, looking for stuff -- is there any chance that things are "missing" because it's multiplayer?
I'm not sure how the game handles lost cargo containers ...
EDIT: Beaten off the mark by Seejay -- thank you sir

Question about scavenging/salvage
Bit of info on containers:
Get a science ops, he will tell you the direction in which they are. If you`re having trouble, just jump out of and into the sector until you`ve zeroed in on them.
Containers do not "respawn" as such. Some of them have a hard limit on how many items you can pull out in a single visit. The resources do not become available again until you`ve left the sector and re-entered it. I`m not sure how it works in MP, but I would imagine it is either on a per-player basis, or until all players have left. I would appreciate it if someone could provide more information about the MP behaviour.
Lastly, make sure that you differentiate between "hidden" containers (hard-coded spawn with constant items and item limits), and dropped ones. The former are tucked away in remote parts of a sector, or (occasionally) in asteroid caves, and are marked with purple blips on the radar, while the latter are dropped by destroyed ships (capitals drop huge amounts in particular) and are marked by white blips, as well as white boxes on the HUD. I believe the latter also despawn after a while, though I don`t know how long.
Hope that helps!

Question about scavenging/salvage
Hello Gray, and welcome aboard. Pilots Ironman, SeeJay, and Epicthefail have pretty much covered the container-finding issue. In that, it does help to have a Science Opns crewman aboard whilst you're searching for those illusive hidden containers, or using the container-finder utility, or multiple/triangulating jumps into and out of the target sector box, and watching for those purple blips on radar. Be advised, there is no objective difference between SP and MP-play in the container arena, and does not depend on the presence or lack of other pilots (MP-mode) in the area you are flying/searching. Those containers that are hidden may be found in either mode, as they are game hard-wired. For most all of the hidden containers, there is a 'bag limit'. (Number of items taken per visit.) The limit was placed so as to inhibit abuse and to reduce the potential for an un-fair advantage. This works in both SP and MP-play. Item quantities per container will respawn/refill once you leave the sector/system where the containers are located.
Salvage containers (those that are left behind after 5X-ing the bad guys) may hang around the area for a bit after you've successfully completed the combat scenario/mission. Those that are unrecovered by a human pilot are generally/usually obliterated by the game software, once the human pilot accepts a new contract/mission. Some of this salvage is good to hang on to (storing in a hangar), especially if you're working a station/system over time. As you may have found, one may 'roll over' selective commodities (aka: salvaged items) at constructor stations, then sell the converted items for a fairly decent profit. Also, you may be able to locate salvage crates on planetary surfaces. These are marked the same as all other 'salvage' crates with the white cross/white X. With these types, you may consider using a Terrain Walker to recover them.
Hope this helps some.

Question about scavenging/salvage
(1) Many of the hard-coded containers were placed close to the surface of a planet back before Vice released the Expansion. Due to the fact many planets are now larger than they were prior to the Expansion, some containers are unreachable ... being buried below the surface.
(2) Containers dropped from an AI can accumulate ... as long as someone remains in the sector. This is easily observed when doing planetside contracts where you're likely to be sent to the same or nearby location, to do combat, more than once.
