Planet with circle (halo?) around it

Post by Prej »

Howdy, this is Captain Prej, hailing from The Wobbly Goblin! :)

I have been a lurker on this forum for quite a while, now I decided to finally register and ask some questions.

Before I start, I just wanted to say how much I love this game. One of my first PC games ever was Elite (yeah, I'm that old), and getting my hands on EM was like a dream coming true. Even better, seeing the game still being updated is amazing, kudos to the devs!

Anyway, I just had the fantastic experience of discovering my first unknown system. I used the sun shadow technique and came across a sun with two planets (?). Now, here's the deal:

Image

What is this? It looks like a planet with a station close by, but it disappears upon zooming in and approaching it shows no planet at all.

I'm kinda buffed. I searched the forum, but couldn't find any info on this. I know you guys can help me out, so please, pretty please! :)

Looks like you did find an unreported system so congrats to you. I am sure someone will go there now to check it out. May be a Phantom planet who knows?;)

Oh and welcome to the forum and the Sim.:)

The 'halo' is a ring. What you are looking at is a planet that is above or below the SY coordinates your ship is currently on.

Flip the map to Rear View and you will most likely see it above or below your ship icon. Left click the planet in the Rear View of the map, switch back to top view, and you should be able to zoom in on it. ;)

Welcome to the community Prej!

you can even fly above (like in Star trek Voyager) through or even in the rings! :P

In the URL above all I could see were lots of piccies of a Volvo, kittens, some sci fi characters, your holiday snaps but the planet was just a grey blank! :D

EDIT: it's appeared (between the kitten and the car. You are located 23 sectors (your SY coordinate) above the galactic plane; the nav map is 3D and show things a few sectors above and below your SY coordinate - I suspect that the planet is a few sectors above or below you.

click on the planet and alternate between rear view and normal view clicking on the planet until you are centred on it in both views - you can then see its coordinates on the left hand side of the nav map - fly there and see what you can find! ;)

END OF EDIT

:)

Planet with circle (halo?) around it

Captain Prej ran onto the bridge, summoned by the Navigator.

- Sir, unknown planet detected!
- Perfect, set course on these coordinates, prepare for orbiting!
- But, Sir, we need to...
- Shush, dumbo! I understand your excitement at discovering a new planet, but let the pro handle things, ok?

As the ship approached the coordinates provided by the Captain, the screen failed to show any signs of the planet.

- What sorcery is this? An invisible planet? Thank god I invested in these brand new PlanScan sensors I got off this sucker on Capella.
- But, Sir, I think you should...
- Zip it, map monkey! What I should do is lock you up in the cargo bay for interfering with orbiting procedures! Your yapping is putting my Wobbly Goblin in danger!
- Sir, I would never dream of threatening your Wobbly Goblin.

The Science Officer chuckled.

- Got something to say, nerd?!
- No, Sir!
- Good, I'm still looking for volunteers for loo duty. Now, where are you, little planet?

He looked at the nav computer, trying to figure out the phenomenon he was facing.

- Sir, what if, hypotheticallly, you pressed the "Rear View" button?
- Listen up, navigation numbskull, what I need right now is a way to decloak this planet, not have a look what is going on behind us. There are lightyears of nothingness back there, nothing else.
- But, Sir, you really need to push...
- You know what, you pencil biting, coordinate mumbling fool, I discovered new solar systems when you discovered how to have a crap while not wearing your pants! I fought space pirates when you fought your sister over who was wearing the pink sports bra that day! You want to tell me how to run my ship and which buttons to press?! Fine, here you go, Mister Hot Shot Straight out of Backwater Navigation School for Slow Children, have it your way!

Captain Prej slammed the "Rear View" button on the nav computer with primeval fury.
The nav comp locked onto the planets coordinates and calculated the distance, putting the shiny white globe a fair jump away of the Wobbly Goblin.

The Navigator stared at the Captain, not knowing what would happen next.
The Captain stared at the nav comp, his face without expression.

Finally, after what seemed an eternity, he stood up.

- Ha, gotcha there, kiddo!

The navigator looked puzzled.

- This was the final test! You passed it! Of course I knew what the "Rear View" button was for, I use it all the time! Now, set speed to 2000, transfer power to the shields and let's get this planet discovered!
- Sir, I am honoured to have passed your test!

The Science Officer took the opportunity to perform a perfectly executed facepalm while regretting the day he boarded the Wobbly Goblin instead of becoming a hot dog vendor in Deneb.

To cut the story short, I discovered the function of the "Rear View" button in the meantime, which made finding the planets way easier. ;)

As for the "halo", it all makes sense now. I never noticed that on other planets in the universe.

Anyway, thank you very much for your input, The Wobbly Goblin is in your debt, eternally. :)

I also wanted to say, that I'm very happy to have joined this community, seeing how friendly the people are around here. It's good to know, that there are still some civilized places in the vast space of the internets. :)

Welcome to EM, Prej. :) Glad that all worked out for you. You might want to overpay your Science Officer by about 10 million :o per cycle to convince him to stay though! :P

You're a tough customer, I've got to give you that. I'll send you the coordinates for our meeting. Don't be surprised if I'm late, I may have some problems with my nav computer. ;)

Also, the Wobbly Goblin seems to be infested with pests after my Engineer smuggled a pregnant Grovnaxx on board. These things reproduce like rabbits on crack and have now taken over almost the whole ventilation system.
Need to do some pest control. Now, where did I put those sarin containers I got as a part deal while working for McDonald's Intergalactic?

Grovnaxx you say? Them's tasty eatin' there! I'll up the music to 5 ter. and throw in a donkey if you bring them all to me alive and healthy! Yes, it's a plain old Earth donkey, but his bio implants make him quite a challenging chess player. You could make money sharking the Al's Quay professional chess circuit, I'm sure.

Alive and healthy? Dude, these beasts are crapping in my vent shafts! The whole ship stinks like a deep space station outhouse after a Zendronian shish kebab party! I need to get rid of them ASAP, or I'll lose my mind!

The donkey thing sounds quite tempting. Say, does he have, you know, err, pleasure implants? I mean, come on, I'm commanding a male-only crew here, give me a break! :o

Sorry, but due to the laws of my home world - Eggsaladia, I cannot participate in conspiracy to misuse farm animals for such purposes. The penalty for mere conspiracy (or beyond) is to regularly (every 20 minutes) receive excruciatingly painful life-extending treatments up to the point that the life-extending benefits no longer apply. :(

The record time to fully implement the punishment and execute the convict is 1117 years 3 days and 12 hours.

Please understand how serious this is as my own race, which is dominant on the planet, kinda counts as 'livestock'.

I can however give you and your crew a 3 day free pass aboard the Eternal Henhouse station (deck 7) where there are quite a few other species who don't have such laws. You should find it quite 'therapeutic.' ;)

And besides... the donkey has already suffered the trauma of absorbing the taunts of self-important chess experts who feel they can only win by making him lose his cool. Isn't that enough torment for one poor soul to endure? :( (And no, I don't think he'd consider the alternative as a 'vacation'...:o)

Hey, who's talking about "misuse"? I just want to get to know him, have a conversation, put on a Barry White holo-cd, slip some roofi... Emmm, have a drink. No harm intended, seriously.

My crew? Come on. These guys are just a bunch of nerds and losers I picked up from some backwater space stations because their wage expectations weren't exceeding the cost of a discount meal at McRigel's.
The Navigator has no idea how to use the nav computer (lately I had to show him what the "Rear View" button is for), the Science Officer is just some smug nerd who's smoking pot on the loo and the Engineer, well, I watched the security tapes and he does "things" in the engine bay. You don't wanna know, seriously.
