Arvoch - What am I Doing Wrong?

So, I keep trying to play this game and giving up after a short period. I can't progress in the Arvoch Alliance campaign at all. I have had fun flying about in Evochron Mercenary, but in both cases I must be doing something wrong when it comes to combat.

Currently I am stuck on a mission in Arvoch where I have to visit several waypoints in a big yellow stormy nebula. I undock and head for the first waypoint. I have a squadron or two of wingmen. When I arrive at the waypoint a bunch of targets are waiting for me. I usually slow down to about 2k velocity before sighting them. I may lock and fire a missile or two and then dogfighting begins in earnest.

I am utilizing countermeasures and attempting to shoot down missiles when I can. When I am taking fire I increase power to shields to attempt to tank it. If one section of shields gets low I attempt to route shields to the lacking sector. When on an enemies tail I attempt to burn through their shields by putting full power into weapons. I can sometimes get a few kills before dying. I don't understand why I am failing so hard. Once I start taking fire I cannot keep a target in my sights, I am kicked around too violently. I can barely tell which side I am being hit from as my HUD is shaking all over the place. If I do get on an enemies tail he just burns away from me, I cannot seem to get through his shields without fully boosting power to weapons. Usually when I risk it I am gunned down shortly thereafter.

What am I doing wrong?

Perhaps you're not paying attention to your wingmen. Keep them from being killed by ordering them back to repair and reload. Bug out of the fight when you find yourself waiting on your wingmen to return ... the enemy isn't going to disappear on you. In fact, they will probably follow you. If they do, stay at a safe distance 'till you're ready to reengage.

I was thinking now that I have the hang of managing my shields quadrants, weapons, and flight I would try to map the squad command controls and add that in.

What about how violently the ship shakes when hit? Is there a way to reduce that?

The bigger the ship, the less it shakes. If you're at the point in the game where you can select a ship, take the heaviest.

Some good advice from Marvin. Also you have to be able to react fast with reloading and your commands to your wingman. Keep in mind strategy and timing is very important in this game!;)

What Maars said. In one "ground attack" mission, I led the enemy ships out and around to the far side of the planet. Then hyperjumped above the target area.
