Hi there.
I've played around in EM for a couple of hours and although I have a significant amount of cash right now I still haven't done any combat.
I love EM for it's difficulty and as expected I get my backside handed to me in the first combat mission in the I.M.G chain.
Because I have a decent wad of cash at my disposal I could buy any ship and loadout that I want, but I don't think it'll really help with my combat skills if I would just buy a Starmaster with Class 10 shields and play Whack-a-mole.
So my question is if someone would mind giving me a ship setup that is around the expected level of those missions so I can practice without worrying that I under or overdid it and just hammer away at it until I succeed.

As a ship frame I suggest you pick whatever flies confortable for you. I personally like fast ships, so I use a scorpion frame when I do civ ship combat.
More important is your equipment.
If you want to excell at combat you will need all of the following things:
Cannon relay system
Cannon heatsink
shield battery x5
repair system c3
optional:
anti missile system
auto CM launcher
As for weapons, I suggest getting something with long range. Generally, range is more important than damage. I suggest a flarebeam, icespear or maxim-R
Or a custom made weapon, which are even better.
You can, however, complete those missions with far worse equipment if you have the skill.
Skill is the most important thing in Evochron.

Or, if you've the rank, try a military ship. The Shadow to Firestar frames should fill the challenge rota for you. Anything less is really not enough. Anything more is a bit too much. (imhyco)

Keep in mind that the bigger your ship (military or civilian), the slower its turn rate. But a bigger ship has better armor. For a civvy ship, you can increase maneuverability by installing a better class of wing. The default turn rate is partially due to the increase in the ship's mass (weight) ... which also gives it greater stability when hit by a kinetic weapon.

The "Hints and Tips Guide" available from SeeJay's site has lots and lots of info and advice - but beware of spoilers!
