container finding "Spoiler?)

Post by DORN »

I found a planet. Sci Off gave me a heading, no purple blip even up to atmosphere entry. At that point the nav instruments switched to planetary mode and I could not follow the heading.

Several retries with different headings and angles all lead to the planet.

How do you find it ?

You could use the container finder available
on my site. It could be that it is under the
surface due to much larger planets now.

Hi Seejay,

I thought of that, but have not used it before. Looks like it is time. :)

Is there some provision for navigating to the reference point once you have that? ... Considering the switch to planetary mode nav?

Oh, I see,

You just watch you X,Y,Z and fly there regardless of heading/pitch.

So, I assume that you run the container finder on a #2 screen? or...

It's just a spread sheet (excel) so you can
switch back and forth if you only have
one monitor. Only 2 jumps in to the sector
needed. You'll notice if it's under ground by
the calculated coordinates.

It is highly possible that the container is inside of the planet. There were several occaisions on this on the EM 1.828 build. It was possible to get them, though I don't know if the same can be said for 2.x.

I suppose that the tractor beam will only recover if the container is within its reach below a surface?

If the container is deeper then one is out of luck?

For now, yes. Vice has been contemplating the possibility of adding a new piece of equipment which can recover items below the surface. Until then, you can often spot the item by using a sensor array ... but only when the object is within range of the array. Sometimes you need to wait until the planet has rotated before the object is within range (for example, the object on the planet in Andromeda).

I didn't know that the planets rotate???

What is that all about in relation to the location of a container below the surface.

It has nothing to do with it.

As Marvin said: It might not be covered by the sensor array
at all times since it's rotating and objects in atmosphere
rotate with it.

Oh, I think I see.

The planet does rotate?

And the atmosphere rotates with it?

You are saying that it might rotate into the sensor arrays field.

Will this be true also if it is below a surface?

Yes, planet rotates and everything on it/in atmosphere
rotate with it. Just like Earth does in real life.

Sometimes, yes ... depending on how far below the surface. Some objects even seem to "bob" up and down as the planet rotates ... allowing them to show up on sensors for awhile (the purple dot) and then disappear. Vice tried to explain it once but the best I could figure out was that objects which were anchored to the planet shifted a bit as the planet rotated.

I guess certain objects on the planets surface rotate with the planets surface and some stay put at a certain coordinate and disappear and re-appear on the planet relative to the height of the surface!.....;)

I guess I am relatively stumped.

Got pretty close to the Excel co ordinates again, but the location is just out of range of closest possible Sensor deploy location.

Nothing shows up on the Radar any time I get close.

Any ideas, or is this an unfindable container?

I think since the Planets got bigger in size some containers might be buried very deep if a high mountain on the planet just rotated over the location!
I have had occasions where I saw a blip on radar but never could get close enough to retrieve the item. And I found out that some containers on planets are only accessible by Terrain Walkers!......;)
