Ok, I've pretty much outfitted my ship with the best there is available in the home sector. I've wandered over to new hope, but there didn't seem to be anything terribly exciting there. I poked into olympus prime to explore whats there and I found a space station. I landed, bought some new stuff that wasn't available in places I've been before. When I left, I was met by some hostiles. I decided to engage one of them, took him out rather handily. Then I get jumped by like 2 or 3 others and got my butt handed to me on a plate.

My question is, am I still too weak to be wandering outside of sirius, and is there some lesser baddies I can hone my combat skills on elsewhere? Or do I just sincerely suck at space combat? LOL...

 Learn to pick your fights ... then, after, run (or jump). That way, you can hone your combat skills without getting blown up too often.

So, you are saying if I want combat at all I need to go out of sirius?

Emerald is a bit tougher than Sirius. You can also try the war zones for combat.:)

I think you mean Sapphire, not Sirius? New Hope is in Sapphire, and Olympus Prime is close to Sapphire, but far from Sirius!
You need better equipment to fight, you'll find it in higher economy systems (check quadrant map).
Inertial fighting is hard to handle but don't give up! With a good ship, good equipment and some training you'll take out all enemies you'll meet without hull damages :)
You just have to find out the good tactics. Come in MP, many pilots will be glad to teach you :)

You're right, I meant Sapphire, don't know why I was thinking Sirius, lol. I'm fine one on one, but as soon as it's 2 or 3 on me, it's time for me to bug out.

Fight in inertial mode (not IDS) and in reverse speed. Use high range weapons (700+).
If you manage to keep a 700-800 range from them, you'll take them out before they hit you :)
Also use frequently the target closest enemy key, always shoot at the closest one.

I managed to get one kill under my belt and survived the encounter. I did notice its rather easy to shoot down missiles when you are flying head on against your opponent. I don't know about the ranges of my weapons. I been messing around in lambda.

 Lambda is a good location for learning the ropes. Intel there is usually pretty good ... so, when a contract says you'll meet four enemy ships, four is what will probably show up.
