It happened today that having some troubles linking each other while on a warzone mission frenzy, I got an idea to semplify the clan link thing and try to get it more straightforward and easy.
Basically I think that inverting the things as they are now will be a good move. Start by having any other clan "green" and be able to mark it red by clicking the clan link button.
This way you'll be able to mark people for PVP combat and show them you wanna fight.
A more elaborated solution will imply a sort of IFF list that you can save on the profile so that your setting carry over from play to play but I guess this would be a bit too much at the moment.
What do you guys and gals think about it?

Iirc, there was a long discusion on the forum about the clan linking. The way it works now is fine I think. People can refuse to be linked. To be linked to another clan as a member of another clan you have acceptance from the other player to be linked to that player. In the past any one could link to any one without their permission and caused some problems!.....

The problem is reversed now as you end up strugging to green each other for some minutes while in a combat mission.
Following my idea you can always tag someone red and thus refuse the link with a key. To get back green again you'll need acceptance just as it is now. It's only the starting point that greens all instead of reds all.

The clan link doesn't work well. You sometimes have to link individually several same clan pilots, and the link may not work for one of the pilots (he still sees others red when others see him green) and have to be requested again. If Vice fixes those issues, maybe we won't bother about clan link anymore
Regarding your proposition DennyMala, considering that clan linking occurs mainly in war zones, maybe clans and indies could all be green to others in war zones only?

The whole discussion when Vice changed it to what it is today was regarding the problem
that other clans can easily track you if yo are green to them.
It doesn't work like that in "reality". You are not green to other clans/enemies to start with.
If it's a bug now that Triton83 describes, it should be fixed. I like it the way it is now.

From what I've seen, usually we cooperate with basically all other players and only seldom we agree to PvP that are....well agreed.
Since then, marking your PvP targets would make sense and having all else green to cooperate.
This is my experience of course; those more inclined to PvP might see the whole story from the opposite direction.
I wouldn't mind going the way I proposed and maybe just limite the visibility on the map to your clan and not the linked others.
Might be good to hide your activity and have a "green" environment unless you pick a fight.

The reason Vice created the "clan link" was so that different clans could fly together in formation. The first method had it as Denny wants, with every clan being green to every other clan. Then Vice tested combat between pilots (FFA) and discovered that, if you were injured and tried to jump away, all an enemy clan member need do is form up with the fleeing ship.
Because of the way the linking program works, both sides must now agree to link, avoiding the "formation" loophole. And, after the link is made on both sides, it cannot be broken except by and for the pilot who wants it broken. Ergo, if you break a link, it's only broken for yourself.
In other words, if all clans start out linked and then somebody comes along, forms up and starts shooting at you, the best you can do is un-link yourself. The guy on your tail can still maintain formation.
The bug, if there is one, is that each person needs to link up. Unlike the original method where only one clan member needed to form a link.

When a clan member is green you can see them anywhere on the map so I'm actually glad it's red by default.
I would, however, like to be able to green or red non-clan tagged pilots and I'm sure some indie pilots would like to be able to do the same.

The major difference between a thing that might go wrong and a thing that cannot possibly go wrong is that when a thing that cannot possibly go wrong goes wrong it usually turns out to be impossible to get at or repair.

Indie Players can just use a temporary tag like [IP] if they wan't to be able to link!......It would be confusing if everybody was able to be linked and monitored!......From post: 158560, Topic: tid=10586, author=Cargo wrote:When a clan member is green you can see them anywhere on the map so I'm actually glad it's red by default.

I'm starting to see the real issue under the surface and probably my suggestion will do more harm than better.
Let's drop it and keep in mind we need a moment of calm to properly link each other as soon as the fight stop... or it'll be a mess.
