Error 7008 upon alt-tabbing out and back in to game

Post by Zach »

Kind of puzzled on this one, hoping you might have some ideas Vice.

Excluded from NOD32 (have gamer mode on as well)
Not a firewall issue as I can get in to games online fine

Fairly confident this is not a memory issue, as it only happens when alt-tabbing and back in to the game. Never during play. My memory has also been stressed tested by other means already (Intel Burn Test runs, Prime95, etc)

Disabled D3DOverrider, but that wasn't it either.

I'm all out of ideas. This is the Steam version btw. I do still have the other web site version installed, but it is in a different directory on a different drive.

In the interest of disclosure, I am using an NTFS junction,
F:\\Steam\\steamapps\\common\\Evochron Mercenary\\
targeted for
D:\\Steamgames\\Evochron Mercenary\\ which is an SSD drive.

I am also using pre-generated content, which seems to be hardcoded to
C:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary\\

I never installed Mercenary on my C drive however... not that I recall
(can this be changed?)

I'm guessing the first thing you want me to do is uninstall everything from everywhere and reinstall my Steam version (preferred). Just let me know.

Error 7008 upon alt-tabbing out and back in to game

Post by Vice »

That's basically your display driver losing data from video memory, causing an object error. It will only happen if you use the (not recommended) 'Locked (FS)' screen mode. If you want to alt-tab, I suggest you switch to the 'Optimized (WM)' mode instead.

Interesting, thanks.

I was previously using FS locked mode because out of everything I tried it gave me the best performance, with no hitching or tearing as long as I made sure Vsync + Triple vuffering was forced.

But it seems I didn't test WM Optimized with D3DOverrider, as it appears to work just fine. I had noticed the issue to be related to 3D cockpits but now that I have the tool profiled for the game, it doesn't seem to matter.
