Ok c'mon... I shouldn't have to forum surf to figure out how to pass the 2nd "story" mission and advance my game. I've tried all the suggestions...
set throttle to 900, ignore navy guy hes slow (he is NOT slow by the way, and bumps you all day long), overturn to correct for inertia... All of it. And yet, the guy still kicks me out of the rings or just straight passes me. Really just wanna progress a bit here but im hopelessly stuck.
I feel like a noob and I am at this game... but c'mon... whats the January 2013 trick to beating this guy because 900kph is NOT it... he cruises along at 1200 or so...
Any advice very much appreciated.

Try 1000 and short bursts of afterburner in the straight sections. Make sure you slow back down in time to make the turns.

Hi and welcome.
The Race was very easy before the expansion. It's a bit harder now thou.
Just like RC said, the key is to maintain your speed through the turns.
Much like a racing car, "slow" in fast out!
Don't ever pay attention to the opponent. Focus on your own flying only.
Set your IDS to x2 or x3 to not get excessive speeds.
Practice makes perfect!
Good luck!

Sounds like much of the info you have already read about this issue probably pertains to 'pre-expansion' versions of the game. Back then, speeds for AI were much slower, both in combat as well as in races. I think you missed the most recent threads about this. There's a couple of other players who have asked the same question. From post: 154336, Topic: tid=10304, author=Rotluchs wrote:I've tried all the suggestions...

Ok, so he's doing 1200. And you've set your throttle to 900... So you're never going to win. This is also why he's breathing down your neck bumping you all the way down the track. He's just trying to get past you, since he's doing 300mps more. From post: 154336, Topic: tid=10304, author=Rotluchs wrote:he cruises along at 1200 or so...
So for starters, set your MDTS speed to at least 1100. Try to make that your average speed, slowing down before corners and using your afterburner on the straights. Make sure you release it in time before the next corner. Take corners like 'outside-inside-outside'.
After a bit of practice, you will be able to stay inside the tracks and win with ease.

As others said 900 is to slow! It was not in the previous before the expansion. Now you should try to keep your speed close to or a little above 1000 but below 1100, Above 1100 your ship will have the tendency to start drifting when taking corners just like a race car's tires loosing grip on the track and start skidding! In the straight sections you can go faster but when taking corners you need to be around 1000!....So an average speed of 1000 should make you win with out much trouble!....

1000 is the right speed most of the time, except at the end straight line where you must get sure not to be passed over by the AI player. It's the only moment where I use my Afterburner.
Be sure to set your IDS multiplier to x2, (Num+9) so you don't constantly have to use the Afterburner.
Also generally don't do races near a sun: The AI will have no trouble, but you certainly will

Rotluchs I am with you on this 1.
I use to play about 2 years ago pass this race with 1 hand behind my back.
After 2 years of not playing I need to relearn my skill.
It been an hour now and I am still stuck at this race.
That guy going at speed of 1200..

The main bit of advice (other than up your speed a bit) is, as SeeJay suggests, to ignore your opponent and concentrate fully on staying on the course. Even when you are being bumped stay cool and focus on staying in the tube
It harder in the extension but can be done. After all the game wouldn't be much fun if it wasn't something of a challenge and you could do everything with one hand tied behind you back as PandaBear used to be able to do

Also, optimize your spaceship for racing. You will need an empty cargo hold as well as the best engine and wings you can get.
Also, using a light frame might help.
I also had trouble at first but after making sure to fly with an empty cargo, switching a more agile frame and upgrading both engines and wings, i made it on the first try.

I'm doing the IMG again in preparation for a project I'm working on.
I tried the Race in 3rd person view (I always fly in 1st person) just to see if it was different.
I passed on my first attempt. Much easier I must say.
It was more like driving a hovercraft using yaw (rudder) to slide through the curves.
Rolling to keep me turning with my rudder control using afterburner to keep me in the tube.
IDSx2 and an average speed of 1000-1100 was not a problem.
The AI ship even passed me in the beginning but I just kept doing my thing and he couldn't keep
up in the turns.

As for speed, it's very simple: if you go too slowly the AI will try to bounce you out of the circuit
Once the AI has passed you that's your only chance to win: Try to ram it in the endline by going crazy in speed: you are sure not to miss rings anymore.
In the solo race (against time) you can even afford to miss a ring and go in again: I once still was in time by doing so.

Yes, I missed even 2 rings and was still able to complete the timed Race. When I miss the third one then I get in trouble! I guess 3 strikes and you are out!....From post: 155452, Topic: tid=10304, author=XenonSurf wrote:As for speed, it's very simple: if you go too slowly the AI will try to bounce you out of the circuitOnce the AI has passed you that's your only chance to win: Try to ram it in the endline by going crazy in speed: you are sure not to miss rings anymore.

Well, I'm glad you are succesfull. My opponent flies several times way outside the rings, but his score is just raising. That is frustrating. From post: 155348, Topic: tid=10304, author=SeeJay wrote:I'm doing the IMG again in preparation for a project I'm working on.

I like a challenge, but a turial flight you have to finish shouldn't be so difficult.
And not to mention everytime stop the game start loading, waiting and start whole over again.
Well, I suppose this game is great fun. But after 4 days trying the same race over and over again. for me it is over.
I wish you all luck and hope the next expansion makes it easier.
I will follow the forum a while but for now the playing fun is over.

Sorry, I have to agree with those complaining about this mission being just too hard.
I've tried well over 20 times and never even got close to winning, yet I can do other things in the game with relative competence.
Yes, maybe in a few months of play with plenty of game time under my belt I can come back and ace it as others have done, but then that doesn't make it a good 2nd mission.
Please either make it easier or put in some way to skip it - I'd really like to know what comes after it and I didn't buy the game to race.

The race is mainly to get pilots to improve their ship control. Maybe there could be a "Buyout" for those that just can't, such as a "bribe" option so the other pilot lets you win;)? Just a random thought. From post: 156212, Topic: tid=10304, author=Taomyn wrote:Sorry, I have to agree with those complaining about this mission being just too hard.

(1) Watch for the next pilot to claim he can do the race with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back.
(2) Send him a U2U.
(3) Attach a copy of your pilot profile.
(4) Request that Mr. Golden Hands fly the race for you, using your profile.
(5) Then have him attach the said pilot profile to a return U2U.
If you can't find anyone to do it as a favor, hire SplosivesCorp to do it for a few credits. That's what they do.

Worst. Mission. In. Video. Game. History. Ever.
I decided to sit back and watch. The AI flew the course at the LOWEST speed of 1174 mps. 1174!!!!! I can fly my ship fine but the super tight circles while doing loops we have to fly through is IMPOSSIBLE at that speeds! The ONLY way to do that is if you are some super ninja pro that flips 170 degrees and hits afterburn at the perfect moment to slide through some of those turns.
Best yet if you miss a SINGLE ring, youre done for. Dont even think of trying to catch up.
