Hello, I'm a new player, picked up the game at a steam sale and so far i am enjoying the basics of the game but am at a loss for what is available to do.

my basic questions for now:

How do I get out of the stating area, and when should I even try that;

how do I get involved with other players: (I hate playing solo if I can avoid it)

I'm an eve online vet but taking a brake due to money problems so I am used to complex games, and the one thing that all noobs have in common is that they dont know enough to know what questions to ask, so what questions should I be asking :).

Look for jump gates to different systems. or rely on your own jumpdrive, if you have the courage.

can I get a sense of scale, in terms of money: I went to upgrade my ship to a new hull and it cost around 2mil, but I dont know how the quality of the 2nd/3rd teir ships you can buy in saffire stack up. What constitutes a lot of money. in absolute terms (I read something about a guy with 10bil which seems incomprehensible at my current income rate) what should I consider enough dough to roll in?

what is a reasonable amount of money I should expect to make/hr and how much more do I get if I leave the starting area?

I have been manufacturing fuel converters when possible but I don't have a consistent source of antimatter, suggestions?

I have my ship upgraded for 5 cargoholds, is it possible to get more?

are capital ships A) playable, B) worth flying?

EDIT: also, can anyone recommend a server/clan: (haven't read that website yet, getting to it)

My advice: don't try to metagame too much, just make money on your own pace, you'll get there. Make money in ways that you think are fun rather than work.

Hello Buffinator! Welcome aboard!

Well, several billion credits certainly constitutes "a lot of cash". As you work your way/fly your way around the Evochron Quadrant from the Saphire system, each system you will encounter has it's own economy/tech, and reputation levels. Most systems away from Saphire have "better" economies. The tech-level varies with the system. And reputations as well. If you're not already doing so, station-hop to locate sources of anti-matter. Sell the end product at another, further-away station in the same system, or in your favorite system elsewhere. Try the Talison-Cerulean-Atlas trade-route that seems to be so popular nowadays. Ye pays yer money and takes yer chances!
Five cargo bays are the current limit for all civ frames, one each on the mil side. Cap ships can not be flown at all. They're solely AI/NPC behemoths.
Starport 6, Ceti-Alpha 5, Olympus One, any of the other posted game servers are variuosly/itinerantly populated. From the game, go into MP and check the server listings. You can right-click the appropriate server to see who may be a-flight. Check the Clan/Role-Play thread, here in the 4-um, for Clan listings/information.

See y'all out there sometime! :)

-splosives- is saying don't be nuts like me - lol

I started Jan 4th and yes I was the one to make 10B in 4 days game time - I am now working on the military side as I have more than two (2) times the points needed for Legend on the civilian side.

I started 3 maybe 4 days ago on the military side - I am now a Lt. Commander and fly an Evoch-C fully loaded with full equipment.

I would do it the same way if I had to do it again.

Build credits on the civilian side as a trader and then move to military fighters.

Then you don't have to worry about needing credits or equipment.

I don’t fly so well – but I know how to make credits!

I am on in the evenings (6 to 10 mountain time) stateside and retired so I can be on as much as I want - sleep and coor's light come first - har har har

I normally only play on server - starport 6
I would be more than happy to work with you.

And first off - Have Fun

So I've been puttering around, I'm doing ok, picked been exploring the manufacturing and mining systems, havent found much worth trading yet but I'm still in safire.

fun fact I have gotten like 20mil worth of stuff "requesting info" from npcs.

constructor, anti-missile system, auto countermeasure, land thing-amajig 2x, and both the cannon rapid fire thing as well as double damage.

I did run into the issue that despite 2 seperate trips to station with the intention of getting fuel I goldfished and forgot and am now floating outside an asteroid belt... and I then derped again and while trying to find the self destruct hotkey... I quicksaved instead... so am I just boned?

Yeah, if you're completely out of fuel, you're boned, ON SP ONLY. Like Marv said, log in online and call for some one to come and trade you fuel. Heck, I carry a fuel converter, just because I can. I hate buying fuel, and hovering in the corona of a sun is great fun! If you can get to where the gravity reading says about 1100-1200, anything that comes to challenge you while you refuel, will fall into the sun! A deploy constructor can summon a fuel station, which is costly, but parking close to its center converts your weapon energy to fuel. It's slow, but you can speed it up by shifting power to weapons.

You sound like you got a handle on the game! Now you want to focus on having fun, since success is sooo easy! :P Doing war missions in warzones will gain you levels to use better combat frames, and those are far superior to the civ frames for battle. And a cloaking generator is hard to come by, but very handy. You can loiter in a system for several minutes in safety. Don't forget, exchanging ships leads to no "depreciation" or resale-value costs. Swap ships as many times as you like! Forget not to re-adjust your frame's configurations to suit you, and if you haven't found out yet, the economy of the system determines which civilian frames are available, but the mil frames are effected only by rank.

If you have trouble with some missions, you can hire local civ ships, which will make the missions much easier. They stay with you until you leave the sector, can be given orders, and don't cost much in comparison to the amount you can make with their help. Become the highest mil rank, and order the navy about!

Build your own weapons, and you can get all the materials you need from mining metal, platinum, and hydrogen. IF you have a fuel converter, you can't mine hydrogen, because it converts it. Hydrogen is found in the space near stars or in a nebula. Custom cannons and lasers can reach much farther than stock units, and often deal more damage. Aside from a few specialties in the stock units, you can out-make anything you can find. It has yet to be proven, but much evidence supports that bigger engines give more weapon energy.

You'll notice the more successful you are, the higher commodities cost, like fuel and stations and licenses. The best way to make cash is trading, and its damn cheap! :P But if pure amounts of money is your goal, there is only one place....

Pearl...

That's all you need to know.

And then there are lots of places to explore. There are no walls between systems, and if you have enough fuel and patience, you can simply travel from system to system with NO GATES. You'll find the co-ordinates for the systems on the quadrant map. Plus oodles of hidden systems and goodies to find. There is a black hole near Sapphire, with a wormhole at its core. Good luck finding it! It isn't hard tho.

That's all you need to know! Have fun and explore! There are no ultimate goals, bosses, win conditions, just play, fight, and have fun! You can roleplay, team up with friends, learn the art of combat (which I find intelligently satisfying, not trigger happy insanity), challenge other players, do what suits you! I played with Marvin and some guys to do some missions in Terrain walkers. Pretty fun, if not exactly practical.

I just wanted to add that if you hire a fleet, it will stick with you wherever you go (even across sectors and systems) unless you enter a warzone.

sure thing - I really like the SP Fleet mechanics and used them a lot before I got addicted to the MP evoverse.
