Maybe someone can give me some tips.
I keep trying to finish the race (second quest) but there is no chance I can ever win with this ship. So I have to start again and again and again.
Am I doing things wrong? or can I just skip this contract?
After two nights trying the fun is really fading away
Thanks for helping
Eric

How to complete the Quest without completing the Race
Hi and welcome.
You can't skip it.
Set your IDS on (Not inertia mode) and the
Ids multiplier to 2.
Try to keep your speed above 1000.
Race like a car when turning, outside-inside-outside.
Never think about the oponant, focus on your own flying.
Be careful with the afterburner and slow
down before the turn.
I noticed that it was much easier in 3rd person view.
I rolled before each turn so I changed direction with rudders,
just like a hovercraft sliding with the nose pointing
inside of the turn.
Practice makes perfect. Believe me, your fighting skills
will be much better egen you're good enough
to win the race.
Good luck.

How to complete the Quest without completing the Race
I posted these suggestions for someone else, they may help you also (some of these SeeJay also recommended):
- Avoid pointing the nose of your ship where you want to go through the race course. That's employing an old style arcade flight mechanism that doesn't work very well in this game. You must lead the nose of your ship ahead of the turn to where you want to go once your speed starts to get above around 700-900 and depending on the weight/thruster power of the ship you are flying. The turns in the racecourse are designed to be just sharp enough to require some lead-nose course correction at the required speeds. Not a lot is required, but similar in form and approach to how you would flare an airplane on landing. Once you get the basic angle and speed range learned, you'll find it's pretty easy to duplicate on successive turns.
- Keep the control management simpler by focusing on only one primary axis of adjustment. Do this by rolling your ship so that every turn can be navigated with pitch only. Avoid trying to mix and match yaw and pitch until you build your skill level further. Just roll left/right as a turn is approaching so that your course correction involves only having to pitch up or down. Once you get that down, you can work on applying the same concept to yawing left/right. Then later combining them so you can do either or both when needed.
- Use IDS X2. Activate it (numpad 9), then just manage your throttle with the wider range of control and don't use the afterburner for a while. Learn the right speed range at around 1200 to achieve the sliding turns needed for the ship you are flying.
- Use manual thrust control when needed. Be sure to practice using that for times when your drift may be too much and you need to counteract the momentum to stay within the course.
- Until you get better at drift, slow down for turns. Keep your speed at or above 1200 for the straights, then bring it down well in advance of a turn to around 700-800 so you don't have to do much drift management. Then quickly speed up again as you come out of the turn. Gradually work your way into learning drift control.

How is is possible that you make a part of a TUTORIAL so difficult, that you want to erase the game from your disk.?From post: 156105, Topic: tid=10425, author=Eleuth wrote:Well, I give it a try.

Skip that part of the tutorial. Which leaves the race in the IMG Quest. But you can skip the quest too, for now. There's a whole lot more to Mercenary than the race.

How to complete the Quest without completing the Race
Hi Eric - welcome
It's true that the learning curve in the game is steep, but that means that you can get to do most things you want or need to fairly quickly!
Want to win a race? - work on it! Frustrated with the racing part? - as Marvin says - skip it- (for now).
Unless my memory is blown because of age challenge, you can do the tutorial from start to finish or do bits as and when you want or don't do it at all until you need to learn and practice something specific because you want it for something you are doing in the game. I'd played for 6 months, made several million $$$, flew a Starmaster before I came back to the race - I needed to get past it to progress in the IMG quest! To win, I needed to change frames back to a nippier one for the race, sorted the race, changed back to my favourite trader frame and moved on.
The game is a sandbox, you can do anything you want (and have developed the skills for
) anytime. Spend some time mining, doing contracts, exploring the asteroid cave (good fun!). There's lots to do in Sapphire before you go and explore the other 20+ charted systems (there are hundreds of other systems that don't appear on the map!)
It took me ages to get the hang of the race - I also nearly gave up in frustration. Instead I went and made some $$$, upgraded my ship, learned how to use some of the more advanced tech, read lots of advice about races and then came back and to my surprise it wasn't hard any more. The bit of advice that cracked it for me was to ignore your opponent (sounds daft I know but do it - ignore him/her/it) and just concentrate on staying in the tube. Vices advice for speeds works. I actually just concentrated on keeping my speed at around 1100 - 1200 and focussing on staying in that tube!!
It would be sad if you deleted the game just because the race irritated you! There is sooooo much more to do.

Oh my that is a good advice. I thought I had to finish the race before going any further.
No more racing for me. It is good to hear I can find other parts of the game.
Thanks

How to complete the Quest without completing the Race
my experience is that racing is the least interesting thing in the game ... I'm sure for others racing is a lot of fun. It can teach you better control of your ship but you can learn to fly in other ways.
I lucked out after about a dozen tries to get through that race. After that I blew off the quest and went on to mine, trade and haul freight, learn combat, and just explore. I've not raced since.
I did go back after a couple of months of earning money and fighting battles and did a few more missions but to be honest I may never finish the quest. I'm having too much fun doing other stuff in the evoverse.
Don't pack EM (a wonderful game) away because of that, go forward, the quest is not required to have fun here. I'll probably get slapped for saying this but I have thick skin.
have fun be happy

LOL Hank.
You won't get slapped. You're spot on.
It's a "sandbox" and we can do whatever
we want out there.
Don't count the quest out yet. You can always
come baxk later and give it a try.
I'm actually working on a quest with a team
of great people that will be fun for both oldies
and new players. I'll make sure that if anyone
can't pass the race, you will still be able to do
the quest.

(1) Watch for the next pilot to claim he can do the race with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back.
(2) Send him a U2U.
(3) Attach a copy of your pilot profile.
(4) Request that Mr. Golden Hands fly the race for you, using your profile.
(5) Then have him attach the said pilot profile to a return U2U.
If you can't find anyone to do it as a favor, hire SplosivesCorp to do it for a few credits. That's what they do.
