DarkBasic Pro and Game Design

Post by Alkerak »

Hi

I need some advice related to DarkBasic Pro and Game Design in general. I've read that Evochron was done in DBPro which I own.
Problem is there are a lot of people who find it limiting. The language, and they advice against it.
In my country there are no game design/game programming courses, only Business Informatics universities, Programming with a flavor of accounting. And even those are weak on programming.
I cannot afford Unity or other hihj end engines and I am locked (legally) to DBPro. Pretty demoralizing ... any advice or I should just "escape" this pitifull country to study what I dream of? Problem is that I cannot afford such an escapade ... not now at least.

Welcome to the forums Alkerak , i'm not the person to ask technologically, but i think you should do what you thinks best for you. There'll be some of the other norms about soon. It would probably be best to specify your country we never segregate here , and would probably help us understand your limitations.

Heh , lel

:o I thought Unity was free (I have an old DL version somewhere out in the garage). As for DB, if you can't find a tutorial at the official website, try a Google search.

Hello

Well, Unity is free, however is severely limited.
My problem is that I live in a country where there are absolutely no resources in order to learn serious informatics related to game programming. That is Romania.
I legally own most DB products, from the core language to most of the extensions.
That's why I asked here. Evochron is my favorite game, I bought it from steam and I love it. However I found out it's made in DBPro. I was curious if it was a marketing ploy in order to make the language popular, or you can really use DBPro to great results.

I think the only downside of Darkbasic is that it requires more CPU/memory than the same program written in C++.
I'm not sure though, that's just what I heard. You're gonna have to ask the expert (Vice).

 Vice is the Dev and he checks the forum on a regular basis. Mostly to troubleshoot problems people have with their computers ... ATM, the biggest problem is Windows 8.

 If you're talking about Mercenary, then jump onto a server and ask to take somebody's turret gunner position. Preferably somebody who doesn't die a lot.

Glad I read this one. I'm about 2 years away from programming and that's an eternity in the programming world. I had never heard of DarkBasic until now. Their website says EM was done in DarkBasic which is suprising to me because a lot of games are in a variety of C+.

I did not dig out the cost of the package but its not free. I know if you want free programming packages you could get Visual Basic, Visual C++ / C#, Java, and others free. Just do some internet searches and you'll find a lot of tutorials for these packages. I'm sure DarkBasic has its tutorials too.

The Microsoft varieties are pretty good for free. I've used C+, C# and VB at work for some light programming off and on for several years. I also used Codeblock which is free too.

Good luck with your adventures. When I'm not too busy building stuff I like learning programming.

have a nice day
