sector navigation...?
so, my ship jumps a handful of sectors or S coordinates at a time, yet all the worthwhile sectors are tens of thousands of S coordinates away...is there some easier way to get from iota to pearl? I must be missing something

Use the jump gates Luke..... One or more to all of the systems in the known Quadrant. Try the ones from Iota-Rigel-Sirius-Orion-Thuban-Pices-Pearl. (Or Thuban-Virgo-Rucker-Pearl) If you've missed the little pink/red/purple blips on your central MFD radar/target gymbal... Or, If you've not seen the same colored icons on the F-1 nav console main map screen.... Yeah, I guess you have missed something. Make sure the text info is turned on, also located in the F-1 nav console. There's also a system/quadrant map available to you there. As well as a map of known economy levels per area of the Quad. And "political" affilliations, per se. Alliance, Federation, Vonari, Conflict and War Zones, and combinations thereof. Clan area concentrations may also be noted thru the nav-con. Location info is fairly well provided thru useage of the nav-con and map features. Familiarity, in this case, engenders knowledge and facility of application. The more you know, the better you'll perform. Being able to navigate your way in the Evo-verse is a rather primary, learned, necessary skill. It does take practise, and requires some fortitude - willingness to invest on your part. Big fan of RTFM here. Read The Furnished Material. The thread-lead Marv posted should only be the start , young Starhopper.

Ditto p.posts
Once you know where the gates are you can go from one edge of the major cluster of systems to the other in 10 minutes or less depending on your skill and experience (i.e. Pearl to Sierra via Rucker, Virgo, Thuban, Sapphire, Fauston, Talisan, Sierra ... quick trip it is ). When you are expelled from a jump gate your typical heading will be "0"; just leave it there (and level) go to nav map, zoom out, find the gate you need, right click on it, close nav map (but not req.), jump. .... repeat, repeat, etc. You need to have a heading of either zero or 180 (and level >> <<) to go through a gate quickly. Sometims you get clipped by a ship going the other way but rarely any serious outcome.
When you go through Thuban or Fauston, be ready to run; they normally are full of baddies. Have your game plan ready to skoot not shoot. Don't stop and fight cause you'll most likely die unless you're a real good combat pilot. I run like heck ... gotta know your limitations.
just my two pennies for the day

Enjoy
