Idea for AOE Weapons

Hey there!
In case you're wondering: No, I'm not refering to the FT-safety problem right now. ^^ But out of this discussion I started to think about AOE-weapons. I had the idea of a rather defensive/tactical weapon - something like an EMP-bomb.

I thought of it as a bomb that detonates after 3-5 seconds and damages weapon-subsystems. It would be a rather defensive weapon (as it would hinder your ability to fire weapons as well and) because it would give ships like transports or traders a chance to get out of a big fight.

I just think, that the mechanics, that the FT uses is just too awesome not to be expanded :D

What do you think?

We already have this weapon: Leech missile disables you for 15 seconds.

An emp bomb that 'blankets' and area would be a hindrance. If one is activated by you or your foe, disabling you both then your foe's wingman can come in from out of range and destroy you. If you have your ship full of EMP devices, it will still only be a matter of time before your opponent(s) will accomplish their goal.

Yeah, but for the leech missile to actually work, it seems like you have to completely disable your opponent's shields first. Otherwise (that's at least my experience) it has no effect at all.

Okay, that would then depend on how large the AOE is. I thought of it as a weapon to give you a chance to charge up your energy and/or shield in order to jump or activate the stealth generator.

@Marv
Do you mean the shield recharger? It's rather useless if there are faster and more manuverable ships on your tail that can just keep on shooting at you, draining your energy and therefore not giving you a chance to jump out.
In case you mean the shield packs (secondary hardpoints), well, I haven't tried them out yet. But I guess they also could even the odds a bit.

Oooohhh, right! That one also exists, I totally forgot :D
Yes that would definately work as well, although I don't like the deploy constructor because imo it's to "overpowered" or let's say to mighty. But that's another topic ^^

Nope, as long as the leech missile makes impact, then the effects set in.

The leech missile is a good counter measure and so is the specific deployable!.....;):P:cool:

It disables the ship's electronic systems so what you will see is just empty space while the HUD disappears momentarily leaving you vulnerable to attack. As for duration, see above posts.

I had an NPC hit me with one of those once, thought it was pretty cool. Use them myself as well, turns the AI into a nice sitting duck lol. Same with that other missile that disabled the engine.

Strange... I tired them once (4 missiles at 4 different targets) and they didn't seem to have any effect on them at all... perhaps I was just very unlucky and having a glitch or something ^^

I guess I'll give them a second try ;)

:o They work best in PvP ... but you need to assume you got a hit and quickly charge in for the kill. Or you'll miss your chance. Down-time is short.

Some are experts at missile impact avoidance so it looks sometimes as they do not work. But if you get a lucky hit at close range you have a good change of taking him out quickly!...;):cool:
