Planets loading funky/reinstall question

Post by mustafa2812 »

2 questions
I have not played in close to a year so this new version is a bit funky to me so bear with me if I seem ignorant to anything

1. I like the new level of graphical detail, but I am getting a weird fragmented loading of planet textures. It is where I am looking at a planet and big blocks of it are detailed and other blocks are at a lower resolution, as if I were farther away. It changes as I get closer to the planet but in a very blocky, unattractive, and unloaded sort of way. I'm just wondering if anyone else had experienced that and if there were some sort of fix.
2. I had some graphical mods installed a long time ago but now I would like to start over without mods to see what the game looks like fresh. I have the game on steam. Is there a way to download a fresh copy and keep my saves? Copy save folder and do a fresh install perhaps?

THANKS!

1 - You're probably observing the normal 'LOD' levels and at certain distances, some will be lower detail than others. The only technical 'fix' for it would be to add more levels of detail, but that would just slow things down and add to the already high memory load the game uses. There are some manual adjustments that can potentially be applied in terms of distance, but such options may exceed memory tolerances with a lot of systems. It's one of the 'tuning and tweaking' options that may come about as the game develops in the future.

2 - Yes, rename any mod folders to something like 'FolderName-old' and for save games: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3433

1. I don't need more LOD at distance, it's just that the LOD seems to be different in square chunks at the same distance. Like most of the planet is rendered at a certain LOD and a big square chunk or two is rendered at a much lower LOD. It seems like it should render all the terrain that you see incrementally as you approach the planet. Is this normal or should I switch some settings around?
2. I will try this. First I have to find the folder that your talking about lol. I knew so much about this game but that was a long time ago. Sigh, time to relearn.

1 - It's probably normal and there may be some angles where the effect is more pronounced then at others. But it will generally work as you describe, varying somewhat depending on the performance of your system, rendering mode, your distance, and relative angle. Those aspects can determine when and how fast planet mesh surfaces update. You can try the 'Pre-Generated' rendering mode in the Options menu to see if things improve with that mode on your system.

2 - Default is c:\\sw3dg\\EvochronMercenary, but the details are available in the post at the link I provided.

Thank you, I will figure number 2 out and play more and i think it will turn out alright. I only noticed the effect very pronounced on one planet so far so ill just ignore it i suppose.
