Questions regarding running multiplayer on the game client

Post by Reignhardt »

Greetings All!

First of all, this is a GREAT game and I am very happy to play it! Cannot wait for the expansion...

I do have a few questions that I was not able to answer by reading the ReadMe or by searching on the forums for a little bit.

1. Does building (placing a station, etc.) save on the game client, when hosting the game through the actual client (not running the dedicated server)? Or do these changes erase when the client is shut down?

2. Running in the same configuration, if a station license is bought, is it saved or erased when the client is shutdown?

Me and my friend would not want to plunk down that much cash if it is just erased later! :P

3. If these are erased, is it recommended to run the 2d or the 3d server on the same box? I would think the 2d but just want to be sure.
I do not have another box i can separate the server too. :(

Questions regarding running multiplayer on the game client

Hello and welcome.

1 - If you host only with the client, no, the stations will not be present when you sign back in to that profile. Hosting with the client is only recommended if you want some quick dogfights, races, mining trips, exploration, coop contracts, etc. It's not recommended if you want to make persistent changes to the game's universe/markets via station building. Either single player to store changes offline or using the server program for multiplayer is recommended for that method of gameplay.

2 - Station licenses for existing default stations are saved to the profile. Those you will keep in single player and multiplayer.

3 - It's generally not recommended to run both on the same system, largely because of the potential for stability issues. Some players have run both the 3D server program and the game, the 2D version hasn't been tested too much under those conditions. It's best if you use a 'dedicated' computer for the server program, even if it's some 7-10 year old system you have sitting in a closet somewhere.

Thank you so much Vice! Hats-off for providing such a great game!

EDIT - Guess I will have to dig around somewhere for a crappy comp to get that server up and running... Thank you for the licenses, that will make a safe point feasible, in the meantime, which is what we were aiming for.
