Mining tips?

Post by Delta Vee »

So, for sometime, in-between shooting down Rebel and Guild ships and grabbing their cargo to sell at the near-by stations for the good of the Civilians, Navy, Energy and Miners factions. I mine at small asteroid clusters that I find every now and then. Kinda relaxing, though I have always wanted to mine on the planet's surface.

The problem: Everytime I have tried, I've become a crater. Been leery about doing it after the 12th crash and repair bill. Any ideas on how to mine on a planet's surface? I have heard of 'hovering', but I don't know how this is done.

do not hyper jump to planet surface, fly down and do not exceed 1400 speed ( maybee lower for lighter ships )

Well, the Hyperdrive issue I know of. As for once I'm at the surface is where it gets unusual. Maybe it's how I angle it or something, but I cant seem to do it without the risk of crashing

approach the surface slow, slow down to around 400 then level out.

Once you figure out how to approach and hover, save before taking off again (Alt F9). 'Cause taking off is more difficult ... you must ease yourself out of hover at very low speeds ... with your nose pitching up at ten to twenty degrees maximum. When your altitude is no longer in the red (and the terrain in front of you isn't mountainous), throttle up to about 500 and ease the pitch up a bit higher.

Too quick on the lift-off and, if you didn't save first, you're likely to strike your ship's tail against the ground and all that time mining will go to waste.

I've found that if you turn on your mining laser, first - then ease the throttle back under 200-400 ft., you can 'creep' across the ground nicely.

I usually do about 60 or so, looking for gold/silver.

Worked for me...

Once ya got that one figured out...all good advice in the above. Getcha a deploy constructor and try a mining probe, either on planet or out in yer favorite 'roid patch. OutPost 5 in Saphire is pretty tame. Lots of asteroids to play with! Y'all could practise yer style there without much in the way of neighbors of the boorish sort... Or Atlas, up off Cerulean. Some say it pays better and is not as crowded. Wolf....

Olympus System, Harris Station - north central Oly Primus map sheet. Use that deploy constructor equipment to good advantage here....'roid patch in Indian Country!

First make sure you set your waypoint close to a planet, but not too close. You might be setting it too close so you burn up in the atmo. Then if you make your way into the atmo, you should make sure you have IDS on and your speed does not exceed 1450 in a heavy ship, and I believe around 1200 in a light ship. Also, make sure you have your ship's power boosted to the shields so they can take a bit more friction from the atmo. Slow down as you approach the ground and level out slowly until you're around 3000 altitude. Then you basically switch everything off. You might still drop the last bit to the surface, bit your ship will level out when you're all the way on the ground.

For takeoff, I do something completely different than what has been described above. I make sure I stay in inertial as my ship still sits on the ground, set my speed to 1450, then engage IDS while simultaneously pulling the nose up to 90 degrees. Quick and effective way to get off the ground, and hasn't resulted in big huge fireballs yet.

By the way, there also is a high speed way to enter a planet's atmosphere. It allows you to enter the atmo with speeds as high as 7500! (highest I've tested). Get the basic descent right and someone will tell you how. ;)

Yep, there is also away to jump directly into a City docking station on a planet. Not easy to do, same dificulty as jumping through a wormhole in a black hole. You have to let your Navigator go though cause he will prevent you from doing this saying it is against City approach and docking protocols!....;):P:cool:

Also there is a way to jump directly from a planets surface or City docking bay into clear space!....but is only possible on certain planets I have seen others do it but I have not found or tried it yet on a planet where this is possible!.....;)
