1 Point towards military rank for every 10 Vonari kills in the warzone and 1 point for every completed waypoint mission in the warzone!;)

The first 3 you can find the gate to them in their respective name System!
The last one you find the gate to in the Pearl System!....

When in combat a basically do a 3d sphere strafe around the group of enemies I encounter. That is to say I
1. Start off by hitting Strafe Up (mine is binded to Shift) and Strafe Left/Right, to make sure the group of enemies are in caught in the lower corner of your screen. Typically I turn off IDS for that step...
2. When in dogfight range, I periodically turn on and off IDS, and have a set speed to ~ +200 of the target's velocity (I try to keep it below 1000, because then 180' otherwise turns at full speed take forever). I use the thrust from IDS to keep me fairly close to my target, sometimes if they're trying to flee I'll hit tap the afterburner to get closer. All the while I'm still holding Strafe Up and Left/Right.
I also have W and S binding to Intertial Forward / Backward - that is to say Forward and Backward thrust in Intertial mode. It helps to keep you from straying too far from your target if your in Intertial and your speed is in the negatives
3. I'll hit them with everything I have, and when they're shields are down I'll switch to just using the Particle Cannon.
I find they're particle cannons will miss me entirely and if they do launch any missiles I tend to fire off 2-3 CMs when they get too close (Auto CM Launcher ftw). The beams will hit you, however... can't be helped. But they do minimal damage. Have you ever tried to take out a ship using only your beam cannon?! It takes foreverrrrr...
I also use a combination of C2 (Icespear, found in Sapphire) Cannons and C5 (Fusion, found in green/blue economies when you have a high enough level) Lasers in combat. C2's do little damage, only 25, but as a concequence they have a very, very, VERY high fire rate and a very, very, VERY low energy consuption. This means you can fire 25 damage pellets at 6-7-8 times per second for well over 10 seconds. (That's with me using the Cannon Relay System ad Cannon Heatsink).
You can take a good 3 - 4 ships out before running out of energy if you keep calm with minimal shield damage and commonly no hull damage.
Some people perfer the C8 (Maxim-R) particle cannons because they dish out 120 damage at about the same rate of fire (I think?). But this means they use alot more energy, but take out ships faster.
...
Annnnnnnnndd that's how I do it

But I feel it too risky because of missiles when they are regrouped during a patrol mission.
Well I'm also getting older an older with no such good reflexes these days.

I either don't understand shield augmentation or something's not working on my machine.
My shield power buttons are the stock keys Front-Numpad 8, Left-Numpad 4, etc. I checked to be sure in the Controls dialog.
So here's where I'm confused. Can you strengthen the front shields before approaching a target? (thus putting more power to the front shield where you expect to take hits)
Or does shield power distribution only take affect after a shield has had its power drained via beam or cannon hits by the enemy?
I've searched around and could not find an answer. Sorry it its already somewhere here that I couldn't find.

It's the second option - augmenting shield power only works after (one of) your shields have taken some damage, and only for those shields. You either boost the strength of that shield back up (to if you want, the maximum) by pressing the appropriate numeric key, or you equalize all shields simultaneously by pressing num5.

If you front shiedl is depleted during combat, you can shift energy from other shields to it, tapping several times on Numpad 8 key. It's not like in X-wing when you can have more front shields than back shields as a set up before combat though.
Then there is energy management where you can redirect energy from shields to weapons or from weapons to shields up to a factor of 5.

Everything everyone else said. I was a "noob" perhaps less than 2 months ago. So, I'm fairly 'fresh' on the learning curve.
1) Buy a Mining Laser - go to Olympus Prime and mine the 'roids outside Harris Station (they are mere yards/meters from the station).
Mine Platinum and Diamonds until you have a 'cushion' of cash and get a Maxim-R cannon, a good beam and up your shields and equipment as you get more cash.
2) Practice on the contracts you get for hostiles at Harris (they number 4 or less) between mining runs to build up your cash - you get 'experience' to your stats, and practice dealing with multiple hostiles. You'll get very good, very fast as your (real-life) skills improve.
3) ALWAYS use 'inertial' in combat - approach on the 'oblique' (20-45 degrees) and let them side-drift by you, or you/them to attack. Never let them get behind you. Most of the time, when I 'jump' to encounter them I go immediately 90 degrees from them - afterburn outside their range about 2000-3000 - then work the 'outside' of them, one at a time, so that only 1 of them can shoot back at me at a time.
4) ALWAYS make sure to handle any incoming missiles with CM as a PRIORITY!!! One or 2 solid hits by them will end the fight quickly - pump CM and accelerate out of range for a bit, if you must, to come back in on your terms. They have a finite amount of missiles (like you do) so - if you must - let them 'bleed off' their missiles. Patience is key to combat, whatever your tactics. You're not being 'timed' so take your time to live!
These ought to help. I hope I haven't given to much away on the initial bit. But you must have some cash flow to equip your ship, as you're building skills.

look at the keyboard map in the main evochronmercenary folder in your computer, you'll have all keys and functions for switch power from/to weapons/shields
learn missiles speeds and inertial approach/run
keep speed over 1500

thank you for the input
I did some experimenting after posting and my keys work. I just wasn't sure when I could shift power to shields. Now I know.
Thanks again

Tip: Also you can jump to the contract waypoint coming out of the jump approaching the enemy fleet from any distance, angle and pitch!
So you will not have to worry having any enemies behind you! You can come out of the jump with you being behind all of them and all of them being in front of you!......
