hey team...I'm new at this game, but totally loving it. I anticipate being a part of this universe for quite a while!
but as always...I over-think background stories and lore and have a few questions. I hope this is the right place to ask...
1.) I understand we start out allied with the Alliance...so...does that mean the hostile faction "rebels" are the same as the Federation? Are the Alliance and Federation at war during Evochron Mercenary?
2.) The "Guild" Faction...I assume this is just a loose conglomerate of civilian corporate factions all umbrella'd under the "Guild" faction (i assume the same about the "energy" faction as well). I guess I'm just a little confused as to what the factions actually are and what they represent. Any guidance would be extremely helpful!
I plan on hanging around Starport 6...so I hope to see you all there!

The Vonari changed everything. To a point. Rebel pilots still take advantage of the political situation and Guilds do what guilds do best.

The Federation and Alliance realms are more allied than not in Mercenary. 'Swhut Arvoch Alliance is pretty much all about (and the prior Arvoch Conflict). Renegades gave us a fine polish on the Renegade/Rebel livelihood. Legends gave us two great treks and the battles against the Vonari. The Rebels are what's left after the Vonari blew up their home world. Rebels are still looking for their "place" in Mercs. The Guilders may be construed as "La Cosa Nostra of Space", or as a strange clan with criminalistic instincts. Sometimes, the Guild yerks some poor rebel into attacking perfectly harmless pilots going about their own business.
You, as an independant pilot, may ascribe to the Law-and-Order side of the mix (Energy/Miners/Navy), or you can pursue your course as a Rebel or a Guild lackey. Missions/contracts are built into the game for both the Rebs & Guilder activities. Faction "alliegance" and therefore mission/contract focus, is a valid part of establishing/building/continuing system faction reputation. You can be and do pretty much as you are persuaded. Some of the paths are longer and rockier than others, but all can be worked successfully.
Energy Faction - pretty much made up of your stations and allied structures, personnel, and system management functions. Lots of delivery and cleaning missions.
Navy Faction - well, they're Navy for God's sake! They seem to loose or misplace things, a lot! Oh, and they want YOU to go kill bad guys and the Voanri too!
Miner Faction - these guys don't like pirates at all, for very good reasons. Mining helps you, but not the Miners. Conducting the Miner missions (anti-pirate patrols) helps you and them. Also, some of the Navy and Energy contracts are beneficial to the Miners. There's a half-page chart, with paragraphic explanations in the Legends Strategy guide, which discuss and illustrate the Energy/Miner/Navy inter-relationship by contract/mission type. That is, if you're interested in a lot more detail.
Think that just about covers it. Hope this helps some.
We'll probably see you out there sometime!

Thank you both for those resources. I particularly liked your take on it, Busch. I had never though of the "guild" as a mafia type organization. I guess I have one other question: Are the rebels human then? And each system just has some rebellion going on or something? I'm having a hard time wrapping my mind around the 'rebel" faction as to what, exactly, they are rebelling against.

As far as I know, the story-line Rebels are human for the most part. Following the story line, the Rebels are those who have "reneged" (are "Renegades") from the "society-at-large" in the Evochron Multi-verse, the perennial Lost Boys of Space. They are those who did not pursue their fortunes among the "established" systems, seeking only to find a place/planet that they could call Home. As they recognize no other "authority" than among their own kind, they "rebel" against those more established functions and features of "civilization". (Heavy on the "civil") Following the story line from Renegades, the Rebs are/were heavily invested in The Rift. Their presence in the known Evochron quadrants is presumeably to acquire gelt, equipment, and sustenance whilst allegedly trying to find a planet to call home. The Guild employs a lot of them quite frequently. I guess the Guild needs someone as whipping boys/scapegoats.

There is a book of collected short stories and EvoHistory available from SeeJay's site called "Stories from the Black"
http://evochron.junholt.se/EvoMercenary ... ection.pdf
They are produced by players and give colour and immersion to the game
It's a pdf of around 280 pages!!

Interesting topic, Minuteman. Being pretty RP minded myself, I have wondered about this as well, but never really looked into it or asked around.
I'm excited to see that somebody (probably Vice himself) obviously put quite some thought into Evochron's background. I especially like the first link Marvin put up ('Evochron Universe Description'), but also the ginormous PDF file. It's going through the printer right now and I will have a nice read on that!
Thanks for bringing it up and also thanks for those who invested time in the stories! Most excellent!

Yes...the material everyone added/linked here is most excellent! I've even set aside my current fiction read (Star Carrier by Ian Douglas...quite good so far) to delve through the available material for the Evoverse.
Kudos to Vice and the community for giving us this universe to participate in.
