Some questions about Servers

Post by Deliphin »

I'm considering making my own server for Evochron Mercenary, but I'd like to know some things before I actually do it:
1: Where can I find the software to host a server?
2: how much RAM is required to host a server?
3: What is a reasonable player maximum?
4: Are there any plugins/mods for servers?
5: If so, where can I find them?
6: What are all the administrative controls for the server?
7: Is everything console operated, or can I say commands in game to trigger things like kicking/banning?
8: Finally, this one is a bit more technical: My ports are having a problem, I know because I had problems with an attempt at a public minecraft server. My problem is when I foward my ports, they won't open. I put in the number, I hit save settings, and.. the port isn't open. Any suggestion to fixing this is very welcomed, send it to me via U2U. (I use a Linksys, if that changes anything.)

Some questions about Servers

2: how much RAM is required to host a server?
Depends on which server program you use. Generally at least 50 MB under normal operation. Likely not over 100. Far more depends on the CPU and video card (for the 3D program) used for the server program (as the instructions will detail).
3: What is a reasonable player maximum?
This depends mostly on your connection. You can limit the maximum number of players and/or the proximity of players to fine tune the bandwidth need for the program to meet your connection's limitations. See the included instructions for more information.
4: Are there any plugins/mods for servers?
5: If so, where can I find them?
Check out the 'mod' forum. For example, EMSAT: http://www.starwraith.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9373
6: What are all the administrative controls for the server?
Detailed in the instructions. Kicking and banning are supported.
7: Is everything console operated, or can I say commands in game to trigger things like kicking/banning?
GUI operated within the program, typed message operated via client (who has the admin password for your server).
I'd suggest starting your search with any security programs you may have installed that could be blocking ports you are trying to open. From there, readers would need the specific model of your Linksys to provide steps on setting up ports.

50MB?! Are you serious? That's it?! :D

I asked about a reasonable player maxamium, because I have very good internet. I was basically asking, how many users will be on the server at most, likely?

My Linksys is model (i think this is the model): WRT160Nv2

Thank you Vice, for the information. :D

 It varies. When the game first hit Steam, a handful of servers popped up. Most players eventually settled into two of them: Galactica 1 and Starport 6. The owners of each of those servers can best provide you with the data you requested.

the max player limit is capped at 35
the player limit is more dependant on cpu performance
than bandwidth

Some questions about Servers

Okay, all of my questions have been answered so far, all I need now is help with my ports. The problem is they don't open when I forward them. It's not my antivirus (Avast!), I know because it used to work, even when I had avast. I use a Linksys, and (I think) the model is: WRT160Nv2. Any suggestions should be sent to me via U2U. I plan on having a dedicated public server, so I'd like this fixed as soon as I can.
