Having had trouble locating objects in the IMG Findind type quests, I just wondered if a Cargo scanner would help.
I understand it can check out containers in space but do you have to target the object first or do the scanners work in a more general way by scanning the area of space and showing it on the HUD?

A higher class cargo scanner increases scanning distance of Cargo in ships....It should increase scanning distance for any cargo floating in space!
I noticed for doing the Spy scanning missions a higher class scanner will make it easier to complete the mission!.....

Cargo Scanners
I doubt it will help you when you're looking to find cargo pods floating in space. A cargo scanner detects items being carried by other ships.
