Combat Enigma

Post by Speaker Rob »

I've read through all the combat tutorials, but I'm still having 0 luck in combat. I take three hits and I'm dead.

I've got a Mirage class ship with shieldsx5 (with a shieldsx3 boost), a lv5 cannon, lv2 laser and lv4 missiles. Most of the time I don't even know what kills me. I'll have a single ship peeled off from it's group and I'll just explode with all my shields in green and the enemy ship not even firing at me. So, I gave up that tactic and now just fly straight in at high velocity with guns blazing, but then I take three hits to my shields and explode. The ability to route power to different shield arrays is great, but seems superfluous as it doesn't really increase my survival rate but maybe by 0.5 sec.

How are some of you combat pros succeeding out there?

 Go here: http://evochron.junholt.se/objectdescri ... object.htm ... and check the armor for your ship. And all the other ships. Besides armor, you should have a class 10 shield and every other piece of defensive equipment you can cram into your equipment list. Then get good at using inertial, offsetting yourself from that swarm of reds and learning to shoot while drifing at high speed. Then get good with CMs and/or learn to shoot down those incoming missiles.

Awesome list.

Yeh, I'm guessing I just need to mine up to a couple of mil credits and max out my shields. As of right now I can take out 1-2 enemies, but any more than two and I'm toast. Unfortunately all the combat quests have 3 or more.

Try staying in inertial mode, and going to reverse. Make those guys chase you a little bit. Make sure you have enough sideways speed too, so you can dodge enemy fire.
This way you have more time to shoot down missiles, you will always have your enemies on target, and you will do more damage, and have a slight range advantage.
Also try using a class1, class2 or class8 cannon and a class5 beam.

The key is to attack sideways as splosives said, inertial thrusters only and either shoot down missiles or drop CM's. When using CM's, listen for the missile warning beep sound. The louder it is, the closer the missile is and that's the time you drop few CM's. Always top off your CM at station by refueling. It only takes 1 point of fuel to max your CM so it's always good to stock up after each battle.

Once you figure out the inertial combat it's pretty easy to defeat the AI in this game.

This is a video I made a long time ago fighting 12 foes by myself using inertial mode.

Link doesn't work for me; Cannot display the Page. I copied the shortcut and then pasted it into the youtube search and deleted everything except the video ID.

That was one heck of a furball. Nicely done.

Thanks guys, I'll be trying some of this stuff out tonight.

Edit:

Just though I stop by and provide some closure on this topic. All the suggestions helped and after getting a decent armored ship with max shields I've not had any problems with combat. Most of the time I can destroy an enemy ship on a single pass without the use of missiles, two passes if it's a heavier platform. Overall it seems that targeting subsystems on their ship helped a lot, as well as picking up a heatsink fin for my cannons. Also, I tend to go with the weaker Maxim-R for it's range. Doesn't matter if their weapons are stronger when they die before they even get in range to use them. :P

Anyways, thanks everyone for your help!
