Item Search Quests - No Items

Post by Speaker Rob »

I've tried running a few of the quests where they want you to go find an item, or retrieve lost cargo, and on each one I'll go out to the nav point to find nothing. I'll search around for a good 30 minutes (over an hour on one when I got frustrated and was determined to find the darn thing) in the area and there is NEVER even a ghost of a blip on my radar. The situation is the same for every station/base I get a similar quest from.

What am I missing here?

 First, make sure you aren't using the Alt key when jumping (default F2) to the Nav point. Second, before you jump, turn toward the Nav point with pitch set to zero, engage inertial ... then jump. Coast and keep your eye on radar ... when a purple blip shows up, disengage inertial and head for the blip.

I've flown to within 10 meters of the waypoint and no blips, I've flown circles around the waypoint at a radius of 1000m, 2000m, 4000m, and 10,000m for half an hour and no blips. I've used up 3/4 of my fuel tank for a quest that pays 11,000 credits. If they are supposed to be this hard I don't see why anyone would ever want to do a quest that puts you negative?

 Jump on MP and ask to ride in somebody's turret gun while he completes a Recover contracts. When it's done, you will ... know how easy it is.

The only problems I ever have with recover contracts;

1. I am going too fast so I overshoot the object

2. I never notice when it's a "visual scan" variation, and wind up having my tractor beam active like an idiot

;)

When I first started playing I failed a recover contract, but that's because I didn't know what the purple blip meant. Especially because I had no idea what a "noid" is :P

Do as Marvin says, he's always right, and seems to know more about the game than Vice does!

Item Search Quests - No Items

I'm familiar with how to use the navi map and such, about the alt + F2 thing, what to look for on the radar etc etc. My problem is that there is no blip, ever, in any sector I take these types of quests.

- I have the quest active (its a scan not a recover, but there is no difference on the quests for me in terms of the item actually being out there in space)

- I always approach from a distance of about 10-12k meters from hyperspace

- My coasting speed in inertial is set to a 1000v until I'm about 2000m out from the waypoint (not my nav point) then I reduce it to about 500v. Then once I'm under 1000m out I reduce it further to 300v until I'm literally close enough to take my wiener out of my space suit and piss on it, which is pretty darn close considering the size of my wiener.

- There are never any purple blips, I've even used a magnifying glass (and I'm 15/10 vision) JUST to make sure.

If these quests work in multiplayer like Marvin mentioned then I'm just going to assume it's broken in single player because I'm out of ideas.

Point to the waypoint before you jump.
Then keep flying forward at speed of about 1000k,
if you dont see a purple blip on radar within about a min or two then
I agree something is wrong.

The lost item will never be very close to the waypoint but almost always will be straight ahead forward or slightly off to the side.

The is one other faster way to pick these up.
Turn 180 to the waypoint, check on radar to make sure you face directly 180 from waypoint , then jump.
You should see the purple blip as soon as you come out of the jump.

Pretty much exactly what I do, and then once I get to the waypoint I'll fly circles around it increasing my distance from it's epicenter, spiraling out from the waypoint.

I thought maybe my starting ship's sensors were just too weak, but I've upgraded frames twice since then and flying around in a Mirage frame now and still having the same issue.

Thanks for the replies everyone, but I think I'm just going to consider this one done and ignore those missions from now on.

Are you sure you kept flying forward for a full minute or two at that speed?

Try this last idea.
Turn 180 to the waypoint, check on radar to make sure you face directly 180 from waypoint , then jump.
You should see the purple blip as soon as you come out of the jump.
If you still dont see anything it will be the first time I have seen this as a bug.

The pod is never ever never ever found before or at the Nav point. Keep coasting.

Edit: Unless you weren't pointing at the Nav point when you initiated the jump.

I always point toward the waypoint and I've flown 15k meters past one on one attempt before giving up.

Trying the 180 degree thing...posting results soon.

The 180 degree thing worked, weird. Found it immediately upon exiting hyperspace. Almost killed myself as when I jumped at 180 degrees to the waypoint I nearly flew into a command ship! So I guess I'll just fly backwards on these missions, haha. Adds character I suppose.

Does it work for you in multiplayer? If not, have somebody sit in your turret ... maybe he/she can see what you're doing wrong.

Hi Speaker Rob, welcome to the game and forum!....Hope to see you out there some time!.....;)

Many times if you approach the cargo pointing at 0 degrees it will be hard to see visually but you should see the purple blip on radar once you are in scanning range.
If you approach at 180 degrees the cargo is ussualy easy visually visible and shows on radar immediately.

For Cargo locating missions I'm ussualy docked at pitch 0 degrees and heading 0 degrees facing stations center column and I just jump (F2) and coast straight till I see the purple blip on radar and then turn towards the blip on radar!.....;)
