Me and a friend have just got this game and I was out trying out the mining and it keeps sharing each contract I or he picks up and instantly fails it if either of us are out of range.
Is there some way to stop sharing each contract you accept?
Thanks
Oh and I was wondering if there is a way to eventually build your own ship? All I see at the station are just upgrades to shields etc. Hoping you arn't stuck in the same ship forever.

Yes, just relocate to another planet in the system, or change systems entirely if you like. It's all location based, that is, the 'human fleet' system works the same way in multiplayer as the 'AI fleet' system in single player. Is there some way to stop sharing each contract you accept?
Yes, you can change the frame of your ship and design a new one, just a matter of learning the various options in the shipyard. Parts are on the left, frames are on the right.

After docking and Entering a station or city, click the shipyard button. On the right there will be a strip where you can select different kinds of frames. Note some of the advanced frames won't be in the less advanced systems. A frame is the basic core of your ship. Each frame has different assembly, armor, manuverability, etc.
You drag and drop the frame you want onto the center ship. It will then give you a configuration screen where you can choose crew, cm, hardpoint, and equipment spaces. Each frame only has so many spaces. Once you've chosen your spaces, you can build your ship with fuel tanks, wing systems, shields, engines and cargo bays.
Remember as in real life, there are a lot of trade-off decisions to make. Is a certain class shield worth having a bit less fuel, Is having an advanced wing system worth having a bit less fuel and/or giving up a cargo bay or two.
Once you have your ship built by dragging components onto the frame, click Trade and Build. Note you only have so much space for these components and if your assembly is less than 0, it won't let you build.
Anyhoo, good luck

Also, about ship building, I think that it's important to note that all the installed components can be customized physically by changing their size on three axis, and changing their position on the frame on three axis. This provides for nearly infinite ship designs! I think Vice covers ship building in this tutorial video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvms8KW9bk0
