Today I received a distress call from the planet Pices, the message was brief, but insistent; people on the surface were desperately in need of sustenance. So I, being the pillar of noble society that I am (a noble person who is also aware of the substantial reward given to those who successfully answer distress calls), took it upon myself to find the nutrients the poor suffering Piceans needed. I promptly began to search the stations nearby Pices, but found nothing of what was needed, until finally I docked at the local Starbucks station. Lo and behold, there was exactly the shipment I needed . . . coffee! When I landed at the starport I was greeted by deafening cheers and fanfare and a sexy young woman gave me a passionate kiss as the porters began to unload the 25 tons of cappuccino mega mocha coca latte vende supreme with whipped cream on the top. It is a glorious day for the caffeine-addicted populace of Evochron because they know that somewhere out there in the endless inky depths of space there is a sleek and stoic spaceman who is always prepared to pop out to the nearest coffee shop and grab his pals something to drink!

I have run out of fuel. I was an idiot to assume I could make it from Capella to Pices without using jump gates. The irony is that I came out here to rescue a stranded spacecraft. Never found him, probably died. I probably am going to as well.

There is something about space that really puts things in perspective. Up until this moment I was a pilot, aboard a ship, traversing. I had a cargo hold full of metal alloys, valuable platinum, and priceless diamonds. I was armed to the teeth and equipped with state of the art technology. But as I sit here, motionless, I realize that all I am is a tiny life form, hanging to life by a thread, that thread little more than a few feet of metal keeping me and my limited air from the infinite vacuum of space. My ship little more than an aluminum bubble about to pop. In my hold I have brought with things which society considers to be valuable, but here they simply take up space that should be filled with things I need to survive. My weapons and technology are little more than a way of postponing death or bringing it faster to someone else. Here I am insignificant, and the Universe is letting me know that in its own, cruel way.

Will I ever see my sweetheart on Pices? Not likely, she doesn't even know where I am--I don't even know where I am.

Although the thought of someone finding me fills me with hope, the truth is ever present, nagging at me: space is big. And I am small.

Lol Agent Zirdik! A very thought-provoking reflection of what we consider important in life! Another writing talent joins the ranks of Evochron pilots!

I hope someone comes to your rescue. I would but by system is playing up at the moment and interfering with the game. Please post an update of your adventure... I'd like to know what happened to you out there!

The sublight communication device just beeped the beep that means there are other pilots out there! I am going to send out a distress signal, hopefully someone will pick it up!

-Later-
I communicated with a strange being. It called itself the clone . . . but somehow I don't think it meant "clone". I believe it was referring to itself in the collective sense. It seemed remarkably eager to come to my rescue. It's possible the Clone are a peaceful and benevolent (species?), but somehow I doubt it. Regardless, I would rather deal with the sinister motives of another pilot than to die alone in the middle of nowhere, and the Clone is on its way . . .

Moments later I received a transmission from a human pilot, callsign Austin, acknowledging my distress call and assuring me that he was hurrying to bring me fuel. This is most fortunate for me, I deliberately forget to tell him about the mysterious Clone. If he knows something strange is coming for me, he might decide I'm not worth the risk of a deadly engagement.

From my ship I watch Austin and the Clone jump to my location at nearly the same time. I am tense, waiting for them to open fire on each other . . .

Nothing happened! Both pilots seem to ignore each other, as if tolerant, or even comfortable of each other's existence. Is the Clone a well known species? Are they benevolent after all? Austin began to construct an emergency shielded fuel station for me. A few moments later, hostile pirates jumped into the sector, no doubt by accident, but the Clone ship fought them off, and even gave me currency to offset the cost of my misadventure!

Whatever happened out there, one thing is for sure. Although it is an inhospitable universe, it seems speckled with oases of honor and friendliness, be they human, or a complete unknown. I arrived Home in Pices, very thankful for the generosity of complete strangers.

To Austin, thank you for your help. You saved my life!

And to the Klone--I mean Clone--(don't know why I spelled it like that :o!) thank you for your assistance, I have great respect for your people.

Haha.. great flight log Agent Zirdik! Your encounter with the Klone proved to be very fortunate... there have been mixed reactions as to the motives of the Klone. At least in this case you were obviously not seen as a any kind of significant threat!

I love reading about adventures from Evochron pilots!

I will always remember Als Quay II, not for its beauty, but for the wanton destruction I witnessed there. And because of the three things I brought home.

It was during final stages of my search for the entity I had recently identified as the Klone. The same entity that had come to my rescue when I was stranded lightyears from civilization. According to reports from pilots I have spoken with, the Klone have a presence in the system Als Quay II, where conflict between clans is vicious. I wanted to meet the Klone face-to-face, and I figured that system would be my best chance to find them.

All was quiet as my jump cycle finished, I scanned for nearby celestial bodies or installations. My sublight communication device beeped, indicating I was receiving a transmission. I keyed to receive it.

|_=-_-|=--_-__|.._-==|-_--_==_._.._=.=.-_|

The message was a jumble of encrypted noises, buy my scientist Dr. Mauv began to run it through decryption programs. By the time we had it decoded, the transmission has stopped. But what it had been saying was:

“#KLONE station ALs QUAY 2. INTERNAL Threat DETECTED! BOMB . . . ALL KLONE swarm swarm Capo! Inferior HUMAN bomb does NOT . . .

From the cockpit I could see a flare of light billow out further in the system. I punched the thrusters for maximum power and rerouted energy to my weapons. When I reached the site of the explosion, there was nothing left but drifting shrapnel. My sensors picked up a ship nearby which was clearly leaving at a nonchalant speed, callsign . . . Capo. I hailed him, but his only response before jumping was “Just business.

Before I could make anything of the incident, Dr. Mauv said he was picking up biologicals from the debris. I scanned closer and tractored them aboard.

In my cargo hold sat the three strangest things I had ever seen. They appeared to be robots, but they were small and rounded, more toy-like than functional. But beneath the glass domes of their head, there were unmistakable human brains!

I was shocked and completely at a loss of how to react. Instead, the things spoke first. One approached me in a waddling gait and asked :

“#HUMAN-alien, why DO you use INFERIOR FLESH CHASSIS?!?

“Are you the Klone? I asked the little things.

“#WE are the KLONE, chassis: pre-KLONE! What are YOU!

I paused, beginning to understand, “I guess I’m your new daddy.

I can’t account for the motives of pilot Capo, nor can I explain the animosity Evochron has towards this Klone, but I can be sure that no one . . . NO ONE should leave a child behind.

Pathetic human Kapo . . .

 That's one of the advantages of maintaining a neutral position in most clan conflicts. IM often begats cooperation. (On Christmas, we even do a few non-combative contracts for Rebels and Guilds. Lots of deliveries ... but no contraband. No, no.)

A few days ago I was contacted by the Klone, after learning that I had rescued a few of their young from the Al's Quay II massacre, they asked me to return the little pre-Klones. I was reluctant. I'm not sure if this would makes sense to anyone but myself, but the little Klone's casual belligerence and insistence that everything non-Klone was "inferior" had rather charmed me. I find them funny and comical the way they only communicate in capital letters and avoid the use of the letter "C". And their broad and absolute generalizations make easy entertainment, poking holes in their logic.

What I'm trying to say is that after I had jumped away from Al's Quay II, having left behind my . . . the Klone children, I began to feel a strange weight in my chest. A sort of sadness, as if I had lost someone I loved. When I returned to Pices and told this to my girlfriend, she gave me a funny look. "Could you love a toaster?" she asked me.

In order to give me time to deal with this unwieldy emotion, I've decide to take a vacation! I will be exploring places that I haven't given much attention, and will be posting photos!

This one was taken over planet Emerald.

Such a beautiful place, I decided I would try to get a room there and relax.

Unfortunately this place turned out to be so opulent, that they have a 50,300 credit docking fee!

I decided just to go fishing on this lake.

Also in the Emerald system, I explored this nebula.

There's a planet just beyond it.

See that bolt of lighting? That one was so loud, my navigator spilled his cereal all over the deck!

I decided I needed to find a cheaper place to stay, so I went to a seedy motel on R230 in the Rigel system.

I definitely don't recommend it to anyone!

Unfortunately, I got into a bit of an altercation with a local gang when I mistook their gang sign for the Vulcan salute.

I hope you guys live briefly and are unsuccessful!

I then decided to take a look at Sirius B.

It's looks very desolate from space, but you get close enough and it opens up into some pretty spectacular oceans.

Here I am suntanning in Orion. My scientist told me I should probably wear sunscrean . . .

'm not sure it makes much difference when you are this close.

This is planet Thuban, not a very nice looking place from the city, nor from space. Mostly sandstone. Oddly it rains a lot.

However, I noticed this green splotch from space, and flew in closer to inspect it . . .

Sure enough, fields and fields of local "pharmaceuticals"! No wonder the local factions are so touchy here.

Next I visited the Pearl system.

The tour guide took us to this shipwreck in the middle of a nebula.

She said it was there after the Arvoch conflict or something. Wasn't paying attention.

But she did say something about treasure hunters who go out to search it from time to time, that's interesting!

I also decided to go as far as Alpha Centauri, very beautiful planet!

V988 in the Virgo system is a volcanic planet.

However, people have still established a colony there. This city is built over molten lava.

This would be a stupid place to have a lightsaber fight!

Here I found an uncharted planet which I decided to designate "Planet Zirdik"!

I know it's rather egotistical, but you know what? It's my vacation, jerk!

Here are two pictures

Finally, I made my way back to Pices. Even after witnessing so many things all across the Evochron quadrant, I have to admit, home is still the most beautiful. The way the sun peeks over the horizon, bouncing off the lake and refracting through the constant drizzle, it's extraordinary. I guess I didn't take a vacation because I wanted to be elsewhere, I took a vacation because I wanted to be homesick again. It worked nicely!

To those who have read this log: I am truly engrossed in this game, and hope to share my sentiment through pictures more than words. I hope that it continues to be so extraordinary and expands both its content and its potential, because both are great!

Thanks!
Agent Zirdik.

The heated argument I was having with my engineer regarding whether or not we needed a repair system in addition to her skills was interrupted by the ship's intercom.

"Captain, uh . . ." the voice of my navigator stammered, "Captain Agent Zirdik. We've received a distress call from planet Glacia in the Sapphire system. They say they are experience an atmosphere pressure crisis and that they need an emergency supply of oxygen. They are offering 300,000 credits for a successful delivery . . ."

I stroked my chin thoughtfully. En route to a delivery contract in Lambda, which was only a few minutes away from Sapphire, it would actually be more lucrative to botch the delivery and respond to the distress call. Besides, even with an oxygen shortage, it would be easy to harvest the gas from another spot on Glacia and deliver it to the spaceport only a dozen kilometers away.

I shrugged and spoke into the intercom, "Send a transmission to the Listless informing Captain Pocke that we will be unable to complete the delivery. Then set course for Glacia!"

I gave one last glare at my engineer, and stalked off to the cockpit.

Thirty minutes later, my ship was slicing through the atmosphere of Glacia. Down below the snowy wastes stretched like ivory oceans. Although the air is quite breathable, the temperature is well below comfortable. But that doesn't stop rich tourists from wanting to witness the endless glaciers through thick glass from toasty resorts. I keyed for the Glacia starport control frequency and announced,
"Glacia control, this is Captain Zirdik on approach. I have 25 containers of oxygen to deliver. Where should I drop them off?"

"Understood, Captain Zirdik. The emergency was reported from the Wolfburrow resort. Deliver it directly there. Transmitting coordinates."

I made a face. Normally starport authorities handled emergency deliveries. It was very unusual for me to deliver directly to a luxury resort. How could they possibly need the oxygen more than anyone else on the planet. Come to think of it . . .

"Dr. Mauv," I said, addressing my scientist, "Conduct an atmosphere scan."

Dr. Mauv began making love to his computer systems. After a few moments, he looked up at me.

"Nothing, Spag. Atmosphere's fine!"

I grimaced . . . just as I thought. "Whatever, fire up the tractor beam and scrounge up some oxygen. Let's not arrive without the stuff I told them I am hauling."

As we began to descend to the Wolfburrow luxury resort landing pad with 25 containers of local oxygen, I waved my navigator into the pilot's seat and marched back to the cargo hold. "Oy," I grunted at my engineer, "Get the hovercart and load it up with the oxygen."

I felt the ship touch down and I opened the cargo bay hatch. I gust of very cold air filled the hold and my engineer and I pushed our way through the blistering wind and snow to the pressure door into the resort. Pulling up my collar to the wind, I banged loudly on the door.

"Do you have the air?" A voice shouted from a nearby speaker.

"Yeah. Open the hell up!"

The blast door hissed open, behind it was a small airlock. Me, my engineer, and the 25 containers of air stepped inside. The door closed behind us, but the inner-door remained shut. The voice, declared over another speaker,
"Please hold while we condition the airlock."
There was a hiss and the airlock became gradually warmer. Eventually the inner door opened, revealing a posh lounge with maroon carpets and a handful of tourists sniffing daintily from oxygen masks.

"Ah," said a balding, well dressed man approaching us, "You finally brought the--"

"What the HELL is going on here?" I interrupted sharply, "The atmosphere is fine and I've flown halfway across the quadrant" (Exaggerating a bit) "Abandoning a very important contract to bring you EMERGENCY oxygen, and I find you are just languishing in comfort complaining about a lack of oxygen!"

"We--"

"Why didn't you just GO OUTSIDE?"

"It is so cold . . ." The man said pathetically.

I gave the man a look that would have certainly forced him out of doors to seek for warmth, except of course, that it didn't, because I think I'm more intimidating than I really am. Regardless, I dumped the oxygen containers on the floor and left with my engineer, pushing the hovercart myself.

Back in the ship, I yelled at the Glacia starport control until they agreed to award me another 50,000 credits for inconvenience, and had my navigator get out of the atmosphere as quickly as possible.

But as I stared at the brand new 350,000 credits flashing in my account balance, I realized something. Even when your business is in rescuing, racing against time, and procuring emergency supplies when they're needed most for the people can't (or won't) help themselves . . .

The customer is always right!
