That almost sounds like it does actually require some kind of modding.
Some file maybe, like the hud mod or setfont mod.
Aye, it does indeed.

If it requires modding of anything, I'm done trying it.

If it can't be done with a "clean" install, it's not worth my time!

 I think that, by modding, is meant taking a default ship and reconfiguring it while at a trade station or in a city.

I think that modding is what can be done with the customising kit - which are appearance changes of various types - but they don't give any advantage at all - no faster, nippier ships or better weapons or better defence. This is an integral part of the game allowing you to replace certain visual characteristics with others, but within limits hard coded into the game by Vice.

What you do in the shipyard or by buying equipment in a station is simply equipping your chosen frame; you can gain an advantage by trading off one style of equipment for another; This is an integral part of the game, hard coded into it; Players who don't realise that the trade off and choice is part of the fun of the game ask for more equipment slots or mega cargo capacity

The changes that some people have eluded to is actually code hacking - in Legends it was very easy because the data was in a simple to read and edit text file; in Mercenary the data is encrypted and Vice has made it very clear that hacking the code or even discussions about hacking the code are unacceptable to him.

Several players suspect that some of the more spectacular achievements reported in the threads are actually due to hacking rather than modding - the "I'm sworn to secrecy" thing we have going is a conspiracy theorist's heaven. Since no-one will actually come out and clearly say that hacking isn't acceptable and isn't required but modding or equipment choice or finding something somewhere else is the way forward there are a number of us who are disillusioned with the "challenge" and its validity. Even Maars, when given the chance to clarify the hacking aspect obscured it "relatively speaking".

Personally:
  • hacking is out - don't want to know - it's cheating.
  • modding would be disappointing since only I can see the effect of a mod unless others have the same mod installed and hence my ship (or the universe) is only "prettier" not fundamentally different
  • shipyard choices would be OK, though given the vast number of combinations it is virtually guesswork
Each to his (or her) own choices though

:)

 I'll just say one thing on the matter... when I landed I just had the original files that came with the game with no changes to them. ;) Relatively speaking of course... :P It is also a known fact that I have no idea how to land on Earth any more as the nanites wiped that portion of my brain. ;):P:P So relatively speaking, I might not know what I'm talking about even now....

Hacking... I love hacking! Like hacking down some overgrown weeds :P :) But me thinks hacking video games is never a good idea :) ;) :P

Why have none of these 'authentic' landings shown a view of the defence ring from the surface? or better yet a fraps video of the landing.

Once you get past it, it will be cloaked so the earthlings will not have to look at an ugly defence ring all day long.....;):P:P:P:P:P
