Hi, new to Evochron - its seems a well put together game (not sure about the menu and loading UI) but the content and game mechanics look pretty well thought out and a natural extension to the Elite/freespacer games.
I am current still on the trial and seriously thinking about signing up but I am wondering whether people are effectively flying combat vehicles with their ships constructed maybe more towards defence, attack, spying etc or whether you can kit a ship out for long distance travel or for a huge traders cargo bay?
How customisable are the ships (outside the cosmetics)?
1, Are all the ships players can own more or less the same size (ie They are all classed as frigates or cruisers)?
2, Can you customize for a huge cargo bay for trading?
3, Can you customize the ship for long distance travel?
(I am currently on trial but would like to check these things out before I buy up).

Can you build a ship with a really large cargo bay?
Hi Zplintz - welcome to the game!
1: all player ships are single pilot ships; they come in a limited range of sizes and you can have up to 4 crew depending on the frame size; there are two "ranges" available: civilian and military. Civilian can be used for trading and combat and exploring - military are better at combat, very limited for trading but good for exploring
2: you can have 1-5 cargo bays each of which can hold 25 units of trade goods - Hence you can carry up to 125 units of the same stuff or up to 25 units of five different goods; each cargo bay can only hold one type of trade goods at a time
3: You can equip your ship with constructors and deployers that allow you to construct a trade station anywhere (within about 20 000 sectors of Sapphire) and refuel (and trade etc) just like at any other trade station. Beyond this you can "deploy" a fuel station which is much slower (it converts your ships energy (produced by the ship's core) into fuel)
I have travelled 250 000 sectors out the the East of Sapphire using a fly - refuel - fly - refuel cycle (Spoiler: "Blog of a DeepSpace Explorer" in the clan fiction forum). There are also hundreds of uncharted systems for you to find and explore. There are asteroid caves containing a variety of things to discover, wormholes and black holes to go to otherwise unaccessible places, shipwrecks (on planets, in space) and containers of sellable goodies to find
There are reports of a technology that lets you jump to any coordinate you want to enter but you jump straight there so I'm not sue that you would count it as exploring. Only one player has access to this technology and is sworn to secrecy about how to get it
The evidence that it exists is that the plilot is honest and has a very high reputation and has published screenshots of his navmap with very big sector numbers in it

I managed to hook up 5 cargo bays on my noob ship, is that going to be max or are there bigger cargo bays or frames that allow more?

I did this in Pearl with FD Torpedoes. Made about 24 million. Of course it cost me 10 million for the station license, so I could buy the goods at wholesale, but that was the best 10 million I ever spent. And now I can make 24 million at a shot pure profit:D
15 or 20 runs and I'll be rolling in it.

SPOILER:
You can also temporarily dump some of your equipment freeing up a few extra slots - buy it back again when you have finished trading; if it's hard to get stuff like a stealth generator then hire storage in a hangar so that you don't have to hunt it out again
That give 8 missiles +5 missiles/equipment + 3-4 equipment slots per trade run!

try a larger frame for trade runs
i use a starmaster 8 equip slots 5 cargo and 8 weapon slots
keep your jump drive and that leaves you with 20 slots to trade with
