I heard about "Evochron Mercenarys" on Steam.

I have been a space sim friend back in the days, I loved playing the "Wing Commander"-series just as much as titles like "X-Wing Alliance". Because I was just a child this time, about 12 years old, I couldn't afford another joystick for my new computer I got from my parents, which had no port for my old joystick (that was a really crappy thing... I still remember it was sold on a discount for 20 "Deusche Mark" :D). I thought flying without joystick is nonsense and my favourite games were only playable with one. Sincerly i never made it to buy another joystick, also because i didn't feel like there were any games released like the ones i liked so much. Thats how i lost sight on space sims.

Now years have been passed and i played a lot of games out there, just no space sims anymore. I saw games like the "X"-series and "Eve online", but somehow i didn't like them. 17 Jan 2012 was the day when I decided to not be a strategy commander or soldier on a battlefield anymore, no, i saw "Evochron Mercenarys" on Steam and i was fascinated of playing a space sim again. I just bought it, installed it and bam, i quitted again... ffs i still had no Joystick. Mouse, keyboard or Xbox controller didnt fit me at all, this killed the feeling of flying in space as i thought. Still i was amazed by this game and what i read about on forums. Never read gaming reviews by magazines who claim to have the right to evaluate a game - they know nothing and should get punished for missleading gamers.

Now i have a "X52 Pro Flight Control System" in front of me, just for this game. I bought other space sims and normal flight sims, to have a range of games to play with my new baby but in the end they all fade in the shadow of "Evochron Mercenarys". It really feels great playing this game, bringing back old memorys to me and the recovered conclusion: space sims are really my most favourite genre.

That's my story how I came to Evochron :)

Evochron Mercenary was on the first page in the shop at STEAM, I did look into it, did some investigation if the game is good and than I did buy it.

I do not regret it.

Well.. here's the story.

Over the past week I was working with a team of guys from college for one of my classes trying to figure out what we wanted to do for a "company" for our project. Well, we eventually settled on creating a game engine, and I decided that it would be cool to create a game engine that was built specially for Science Fiction.

Sunday, I actually ended up looking a little closer at Evochron Mercenary (it was on Steam) while trying to finish up our assignment and thinking, hey... this might be a cool game to try out sometime, looks kinda like what I wanted to kinda wanted to see in a Sci-Fi game. Looking deeper after submitting the assignment, I thought.. oh.. hey wait... this engine (along with the Infinity game engine) are.. what I really.. REALLY wanted in a game.

After sitting down and digging in to Evochron more, I started noticing something familiar about it. Like.. I had played the the game before. After playing the demo, and finding the history of the Evochron games, I found out I actually played the first Evochron game and had actually forgotten about it! Of course, I was young and stupid back then (and a high school student), and decided to pirate the game with the intention of buying it. Never got around to buying it, but the game has been completely purged from that computer system. Haven't pirated a computer game since then.

So.. where did I first here about Evochron Mercenary? Well.. from Steam.. yes.. but Evochron a lot longer ago... still can't remember how I stumbled upon... it.. oh yeah.. a game called Starscape I think helped me stumble upon it.

Playing the demo of Evochron Mercenary has gotten me hooked again.

Oh.. and.. down with pirating! (The.. y'know.. money loss kind that affects real world people).

I first heard about the Evochron series just recently I was a big fan of Freelancer but never found a game similar until now. I saw an add for the game on steam and grabbed it. Honestly one of the coolest space sims I have played yet!

steam should be in the selection, havent played a game like this since wing commander for the 3DO gaming console. no other game has satisfied my hunger for space fighting, this game provides a real challenge and i cant wait for the expansion! high five to the creator, where can i donate? =D

I play Freelancer and I saw that the server Archy's Portal was no longer on the list. Went to the other servers on their wiki and clicked on the website link for that server and saw a logo for Evochron Mercenary. Looked it up on wikipedia and said this might be interesting. D/l'd the demo and liked it. Liked it a lot so I bought it. Best money I've spent on a game in a long while.

Found a very brief space sim thread on 4chan's /v/ board and saw mention of it. A few weeks later I tried to remember what the game was called and decided to look up the atmospheric entry video I found to get the name again. I had played that Hellbender demo that came with the windows 95 CDs way back in the day as well as StarLancer, and even just the experience of those 2 games alone had me plenty capable of playing this game, it seems.

Hi, new to this place and this is how I found it:

Short version: I searched google for 'games like elite', landed on the frontier.co.uk boards in a certain thread and among the games listed there found this one to be promising. :)

slightly longer version extending on the non-technical part:

Basically I've loved this type of games since I played Elite on my Amiga 500 when I was a boy and that game was still brand new. Although they may have had their flaws I also liked the two sequels to Elite.

Presently I would also call myself a fan of the X Series from egosoft, but I'm missing a certain aspect from Elite 2 and 3 (aka Frontier: First Encounters), that is hard to describe, but most likely is linked to the conveniently laid out "backyard-sectors" in the X Games. I really loved the simulated solar systems from the later Elite games where the planets actually rotated around the sun ... and also the aspect of entering planets' atmospheres is something. It increased the sense of "vastness" in regard to the universe one was playing in.

Even though: Time has progressed and even though I'm not asking for the production values of present AAA titles I'd really like something more innovative than an alternate executable running FFE on modern windows systems.

I honestly still don't know whether I found what I'm looking for here, but youtube videos seem promising.

By accident (since it was referred to in the old link on the frontier.co.uk boards) I first downloaded Evochron Renegades, which go to the main menu, but crashed with a runtime error 10 on trying to get into the actual game. After that I watched an episode of Stargate Atlantis, since the server kept being unreachable when I wanted to download Evochron Mercenary and then I felt like writing this post before trying the demo of that game right after it, since by now the download has finished.

So, that's how I got here. :)

I googled for space sim with customizable ships around last fall.

I played the demo and it was good, but on my old Pentium 4 it wasnt running that good (but it ran even without pixel shader 2.0 card)

A add at Steam remembered me playing the demo, so I bought it the last days, since I got a new system with which it runs much better.

Found out through Steam.

Like many here I played A LOT of Elite back in the day on my ZX Spectrum. I loved Elite, but have not played a Space Trader/Space Sim since. I did a little bit of investigation about EM and then dived right in. Been playing for the last few days now and loving it. I'm currently doing some mining/trading to upgrade my ship then it's on to the first IMG combat mission.

I'm planning to go through the IMG questline first, then I'll hop onto MP once I feel slightly more at ease with the game. So, I guess I'll catch some of you guys soon. If you see me out there, please be nice :P
